Choose amusement parks over legalised casinos, says Abhisit
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- THE PUBLIC debate over the controversial proposal to have legal casinos in Thailand is heating up, with Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva questioning whether Thailand wanted to be known as gambling and a prostitution destination.

"Why not think of making Thailand renowned for amusement parks instead? In which profile should Thailand be positioned in terms of supporting its blossoming tourism industry?" he said.

Abhisit had earlier called on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to show a clear stance on the casino issue.

"Why not study the negative effects of casinos in Singapore, which sees them as problematic?" he added.

PM's Office Minister ML Panadda Diskul said having legal casinos would not result in the numerous illegal gambling dens in Thailand disappearing. He said a study on casino models in various countries must be considered to weigh up the pros and cons in individual cases.

Meanwhile, Panadda said he agreed with Abhisit's call for the abolition of the Prayut government's 12-point code of values, which aims to promote good conduct among young people including opting for virtue over vice

An amusement park ?

Is he suggesting sitting in on what's laughing referred to as a parliamentary session ?

When I first came to Thailand there was a TV show on now and again which I thought was a comedy and I used to watch it although back then I could not understand a word they were saying.

One day I asked my wife what this comedy show was all about and she said it was the government, a parliamentary session. thumbsup.gif

The only thing missing are the bells, whistles, cymbals and drum rolls.

If they dressed in clown costumes with big red noses and size 24 shoes, that would be good. biggrin.png

Heads up for you Mr Abhisit, your country is already more than well known as a prostitution destination, being known for gambling also won't make any difference to those that come here (whatever their reasons).

Funnily Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, has legalized prostitution and casinos, but its not re-known for it, probably because no-one wants to go there.

Shouldnt they just build a casino/amusement park combo, somewhere to send the kids while you play baccarat?

From what I've seen many Thais dont know how to play the games in casinos.

Want some more tourist money?

Legalize and control prostitution.

Legalize and control marijuana.

Deal with all the tourist scams.

Clean up the environment.

Yes, amusement parks would be good too, but as someone mentioned health and safety would be needed.

Casinos...the locals would suffer mostly. On the whole, they are not mature enough yet for this.

I hear they are building one now in BKK at a cost of around 12 billion, although the work is a few years behind and the clowns have yet to be elected.

Ahh, another snide comment at the concept of democracy. I get it. You don't want the locals electing their leaders and you support one man rule by an army general.coffee1.gif

Can you imagine the fight over the concession if they do legalize one, all that face to be gained and the stupid amount of money it would rake in.

Atm my guess it will go to someone in the military, just a hunch, 5555.

Singapore also resisted casinos for a long time.

They relented, and the Casino complexes they built have added real vibrancy to the city state.

If Thailand would allow foreign casinos to operate in the country, like Singapore did, perhaps it could add something to Thailand as a tourism destination...

I'm sure there would be plenty of interest from International casinos...just like Singapore.

Wait, if the PM's office minister agrees with the abolition of the use of the 12 points does that mean the pm wants to abolish his own initiative?

I think prostitution is already making the maximum possible money, no need to improve.....

Agree on the rest. Specially environment. Beside a few spot Thailand is really B quality for Scuba Diver already. They go other countries.

A family park.....

The small kids stay with Mikey Mouse, the 16year old is smoking some Marihuana while mum is playing on the slot machine and pa is enjoying some girl.

Just as there is an "illegal" underground lottery, there are hundreds of illegal local casinos in every province and in Bangkok. These are not challenging to locate, and are to a certain extent a scourge.

I'd be against legalized casinos, but suspect the "powers that be" see the tourist opportunity which Singapore and Macau rake in, so will get their way unless certain people weigh in. One or two large casinos - not sure where they'd be exactly - might get built, and only be available to foreigners, or upper-crust Thais?

Isnt Thailand just one big amusement park where everything is either a joke, absurd, funny or unbelievable.

You roll the dice every time you come through the arrival gates.

You start opening Casinos, and the Thai Families will Suffer, especially the Children, money lost and No Food for Family, a Scourge in Issan.

On the flip side just imagine how many would vote for you then if you offered 50% above market value for rice!

thaksin would be dribbling at the mouth with this business model as it would make stealing from the tax payer a lot more legitimate. Taking the tax payers money laundering it through the casino and into his pockets. No wonder he wanted them so badly a few years ago.

The bad luck stories out of Ban Laem casino are pretty sad though. Thai guys taking their cars over the border, betting and loosing everything over 36 hours straight gambling and walking back to the wife to tell her they have nothing left only for her to leave him. Never any stories of walking to Ban Laem and returning cashed up with a brand new Toyota Forerunner to an 18 year old model pleading to get married to you.

Amusement parks are a wonderful idea, but then they would have to be maintenance free parks which sadly would not be very amusing. Even in Australia recently a roller coaster malfunctioned and people were stuck in it for a few hours waiting to be removed. Not in a million years would I be caught riding a Thai roller coaster. Thai airways is the most adrenalin packed ride that I would venture on, but that ride costs a fortune.
