Help. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Every evening after walking with a group of local farangs,

we all meet up at a bench/table outside of our local 7-11. We've all grown attached to a

pack/family of dogs who make this market their home. They are well fed by the vendors and

except for living outdoors, they appear happy and healthy.

Yesterday, I was first to arrive at the market and found "Smiley" (locals call him the Thai

word for fang) struggling to walk. He looked like a new born calf trying to stand. A very pitiful

sight.

With the help of a Thai friend, we got Smiley in a taxi and brought him to a vet just up the street.

He had a high fever and at first the vet suspected poison. He was given an IV of saline and

medicine to bring down his fever.

I returned to the vet this evening and was told that it is very likely that his paralysis was due

to some sort of trauma - which appeared to vet to be a blow from, you guessed it - a human.

A car strike was discounted due to lack of skin abrasions. I'll likely never know - and fear knowing

the truth.

I asked the vet what could be done and she recommended a custom built doggy wheelchair.

I'm happy to pay Smiley's medical bills and the cost of his wheelchair, but I can't imagine him

successfully living out his days in the market.

I'm the proud father of five rescue cats and one rescue dog...it's a full "house"/condo.

My question is simply...does anyone have any insight as to what can be done? who to speak with? any

insight?

Kind thanks for any input :)

There is a shelter that will take him in and if you pay the medical bills, i am certain they would be glad to assist.

I have a disabled dog in a wheelchair, which was hit by a car.

Take him in, he will be ok with your cats because he grew up on the streets and soi dogs usually ok with cats.

If you like i can give my old wheel chair, it may need some work done to adjust or can suggest locally made ones, around 5000 baht from memory.

PAC is the name of the shelter or contact this guy https://www.facebook.com/DharmaRider?fref=nf&post_id=787563198025515

But as i said, i would take him in and let him live out his life in peace and harmony.

PS, I just realized, i do not know your location, this shelter is in Pattaya.

I would love to help, but just like yourself, have 6 dogs and 12 cats. just too full

PPS. weakness could also be due to ticks, has Vet run the blood works? or xray/ultrasound?

I'm located in Bangkok.

He's only spent, now, two nights at the vet,

so this evening I'll be better able to to

answer you questions.

Thank you for the link

Kewl, let me know if you want/ need my wheelchair. I know in this shelter they made space for disabled dogs, soft sand and grass .

Hope it's just ticks and nothing else :)

Thank you all. He's getting a full blood workup today + x-rays.

So far, he doesn't appear to be in pain. No solid food yet,

but is drinking water. I'll know much more this evening

and will post directly.

It does sound like it could be tick bite fever. Easy to cure, if diagnosed in time.

i havnt long gone through the above with my beloved, same symptoms, but we were lucky we caught it in time,it took over 10weeks of treatment.

sadly to say his best freind passed away last night and the cause 99% parasite or ticks.

Very sorry for your loss. Thanks to you and the other kind posters I'm really suspecting it might just be

parasites/ticks that is causing Smiley's paralysis. I just walked down to the vet and asked her

to do the necessary blood test/s to determine if that might be an infection. Some sort of trauma is

making less and less sense to me, because though he can't stand up, he CAN move his hind legs...I

don't think that would possible if it were a spine injury. Time will now tell.

If he is old and in pain he's better off being put down. It's the best thing.

According to whom?

You guys are dreaming

Here old paralyzed /unable to feed themselves/ in pain, dogs are NOT PUT DOWN.

No vet will do it.

I witnessed one dog suffer a martyr in a vet cage for over a year and I had the talk with the vet many times.

Yes he was in excruciating pain, yes he was paralyzed,no he would never get better, but legally she could not put it down.

This is painful to watch I even thought of killing it myself as the cage was outside day and night.

When he died after a year + of pain, I was relieved

It may have been the exception that proves the rule but after taking my friends Soi dog to a third vet, the vet finally agreed to put the poor creature out of her mysery with an injection. He'd kept the dog for two days and he would neither eat nor drink.

The only condition was we had to put the dog in my trunk (boot) and take it to a wat for burial.

Update:

I found out yesterday from a friend who speaks Thai very well that Smiley was in fact hit by a motorcycle.

This morning we drove him to Mahidol Vet hospital.

He is suffering from major nerve damage in his lower spine which has left him, for all intents and purposes,

paralyzed and incontinent, but happily not in pain.
He will spend his remaining days under the vigilant care of a nearby friend.

I am heartsick.

Oh that is sad, but do not give up hope. Nerves do heal.

Best if you can take him swimming. Nerve damage takes time.

If he can go toilet, then he can live a long life,

Also add glucosamine into his food.

Initially my disabled boy could not stand at all, but after 6 months of swimming and massage, he can stand and walk a little, but his case was much more severe, broken spine(with plate now) and both back legs broken

His nerve has not fully healed but he can walk little, otherwise has a full happy life playing with other dogs, chasing cats, climbing stairs and climbing into bed every morning for a morning cuddle.

I have no words that could say how much i admire you lot for helping the dogs and cats that you take in.

Bravo, is all i can say. Which sounds a bit posh, but isn't meant to be. You know what i mean, maybe a hug and a kiss is better.

Where do we go to collect hugs and kisses? :)

Soi dogs are indeed a traffic hazard as well as a health risk and a danger to kids. IMHO Thailand would be better without them and to that end I would never feed them again. Although I used to at one time I came to relalise this was just perpetuating an already chronic, but ignored problem.
