Bringing Thai Prescription to USA

I'm flying home to the USA in July after having been in Thailand for almost 2 years. While here, I got a prescription for Clonazepam (Klonopin) for some sporadic bouts of insomnia I had.

The DAY I land in NYC, I have a friend's wedding rehearsal to attend, and I'm afraid I am really going to need the stuff just to deal with the anxiety of being totally jet-lagged, and to help me sleep at the correct times.

Is Xanax/Klonopin legal, and easy to bring back stateside, provided I have my doctor's prescription?

If NOT, what are the legal ramifications of bringing it home, and would it be more successful to bring it home in CHECKED baggage, or CARRY-ON?

Good information. But what about medications that are either available OTC or are unscheduled in the US? There are a few things I've bought here, such as Piracetam, that are legal in the US. I would rather avoid paying to have it shipped to the US as I have a supply here already.

Should I check it or bring it with me on the plane? Again, it's available legally in the US as a supplement.

Yes, assuming the prescription is for the recent time period, and covers the quantity of pills in your possession.

I would carry the pills in the original container (from the pharmacy/hospital), and I would have them in my carry-on as you do not want to be without prescription medicines in the event your checked luggage is mis-handled/lost/delayed.

I might make sure that the prescription is in English, along with any other supporting documentation (paid bill from hospital, letter from doctor) and I might bring the absolute minimum number of pills to see you through.

Personally, I have no problems re: sleep/jet-lag going from Thailand to the U.S., but returning it can take me a few days to get back to normal.

OTC meds should be fine. Paracetamol (not sure if that is what you meant) is fine to bring (having it in the original packaging might be ideal); it is also widely available in the U.S., as Tylenol for example.

That's good to hear, bamnutsak. I'll be seeing many many old acquaintances and meeting a lot of people for the first time so I want to be on top of my game.

If you're going to stay 2 weeks in the US, don't bring a 2 month supply...Bring only enough for your stay. Even with a doctor's prescription.

You are allowed to bring up to a 90 day supply of medication into the USA. I was told that by customs officials when I returned a few years ago.

Yes, I know that already. My question was whether a Thai prescription is honored in the U.S., or if they would merely rip my prescription from my pleading hands.

Just bring your prescription along with you....you should be fine. Keep it in your carry-on bag.
