Three masked student activists briefly detained in Chiang Mai for holding protest

CHIANG MAI: -- Three students in connection with the brief demonstration in front of the US Consulate in Chiang Mai yesterday were briefly detained by police and soldiers.

They were questioned and have their identities booked in police file before being released.

It wasn’t immediately known if any charge was imposed on the activists.

They were among the 10 masked student activists gathered at the consulate to protest the arrest of 14 students in Bangkok last week, and demanded their release unconditionally.

The activists held placards pledging support for human rights, democracy and nonviolence.

They wore masks with carton portraits resembling some of the 14 students arrested and now remanded to Bangkok Remand Prison.

One student read a statement condemning the arrest and demanded their unconditional release, according to Matichon online.

He said their decision to come out and make this demand is nothing more than doing a duty of friends who see their friends being bullied by injustice.

He said he didn’t understand why the state sees the youths who hold the principles of democracy, human rights, justice, public participation, and non-violence, as individuals is a threat to national security.

The student activists quickly dispersed from the consulate before soldiers arrived to inspect the scene.

But several hours later, police arrested three people at a cafe in Chiang Mai in connection with the protest.

The three suspects were taken to the police station for interrogation.

Their identities were not identified. However they were later freed.

The protest came as Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha arrived in Chiang Mai in the afternoon to attend the mobile cabinet meeting to begin Tuesday.

Earlier security officials assured there would be no protest in Chiang Mai as they have placed more than 3,000 security officials on standby to watch out any protest movement.

beware the sleeping student body for ere it awakens ... !

Chiang Mai will have 3,000 security personnel on duty to prevent demonstrations with the mobile cabinet in town so the big strong military men have to be protected from those who want to exercise a right to voice their opinion.

There's nothing to fear except perhaps some home truths but there again not only does the truth hurt it's totally unacceptable.

I have several ex students, now in their mid 20's, who are wanting to attend silent protests based on what they see happening as their right in other countries ,most went abroad at one time as exchange students.

Its only that their families have begged then not to take part for fear of arrest that have stayed away. This paranoid junta fears people standing silently with a placard or actually making a statement.

The world is watching.

Nah, the world doesn't really care.

Also the world realizes that the military and their backers have always called the shots, just more often behind the scenes than in front.

The only people that I'm confident to say are caring would be those students. Good on them.

Red-shirts protesting for democracy and non-violence ?. They need to spend more time in school.

At least they can stand there and feel safe : nobody will be firing grenades at them.

Others gave their lives not so long ago so people can do that now.

It would be very difficult for despots to sieze power without people like you around. You're either some sort of military groupie or a super wum.

students are found in classroom learning or are they flunking out and are lazy, basically unemployable. they can make it, right at the top tier of thai politican/civil severent.

put in a few years of working 12 to 15 hours a day like many of the honest thai men and women, then come back and suggest workable solutions which will benifet the nation as a whole

Agreed... It is always the easy way out with many of them.. yet, let them have it.. hmmm.. would something called responsibility make it as a subject with these so called "students" ?

YES.. have them learn what they parents have done to enable them to gain an education. Many of the parents never had the opportunity to take advantage of the value of education back in their day.

Would these students learn to appreciate the hard work their parent put.. ngaahhh.. too much thought is necessary..
