Cash-counting monk busted again

PATTAYA:-A monk who gained notoriety after being caught on video counting stacks of money on a Sriracha roadside was detained in Pattaya following complaints he was soliciting money.

Mahaniphon Susutto was spotted inside a white Isuzu van parked near the Royal Cliff Beach Resort. When police approached, he sped off and was chased up Pratamnak Hill before being stopped at the Naval Radio Station viewpoint.

The monk, however, refused to get out of the van, prompting officers to bring in a tow truck and haul it to Pattaya Police Station with the monk still inside. There he finally exited the van and got into a heated argument with authorities, insisting he had done nothing wrong.

Mahaniphon told police he was not soliciting funds and officers found only herbs and appliances in his van, but no illegal substances. He also pointed out nothing in Buddhist rules prohibit him from driving.

Police, however, fined him 800 baht for not having either a license or car registration. They also took him to the chief monk in Naklua to determine if he should be disrobed.

On June 2, the 52-year-old monk was video-recorded counting bundles of banknotes in public. He told police the money was donated by Buddhist followers and that he would use it to build new monasteries.

He also was previously fined for failing to produce a driver’s license in Phatthalung province.

If they were to disrobe every fraudulent monk......there would be an awful lot of orange dusters available!

Why post threads about monks.

Pointless.

... because the diverse ThaiVisa community are interested in all trends in fashion, and would be unlikely to appreciate too many stories about naked monks [or naked men of any fashion] so I say keep up the stories about Monks in threads and ascetic Monks in shreds, along with the latest Louis Vuitton threads and any other lifestyle and fashion stories that we readers can not afford on our beer and batter budgets!!!

Why don't the police simply smash the driver's window, unlock the door and haul him out? This happens over and over again - a driver refusing to leave the vehicle when asked, and a tow truck called in. I remember one driver had to be towed from Issan to Bangkok sometime last year so someone could be found to unlock the door. Amazing country.

Transfer him to an inactive temple...

depends how "inactive" you want - sounds like he is already collecting money for an non-existent inactive temple.

Disrobe this ignorant fraud and be done with it.

Maybe disrobed already who knows if he is even a monk.just a con man playing on the vulnerability of uneducated people who believe in the garbage these monks spout, come on it's all about how. To get lucky and get free money..

The "police" seem to have a training curriculum that sidesteps officer safety, progressive use of force and command presence. Yes, very amazing.

Towing him in the van seems the perfect non violent solution, he had to come out sooner or later. "simply smash the window and haul him out"? Are you guys retired US policemen?
