Car Insurance for a rental car=>Additional Insurance package?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

For my next trip to thailand i do plan to rent a car, for about nearly 1 month.

I just realize that the most rental companies in thailand have a "super poor" thirt party insurance inclusive. The most of them just only cover max 50.000 THB.

Is there any way in thailand to "push it up" by any additional insurance? Any insurance company in thailand who offer a additional package for that? How to do?

All recommendations are welcome. Thanks.

I always rent a car from the international franchise companies such as Hertz or Avis at an airport. I always reserve it while in the US by using the parent company's website in the US to preserve my consumer rights with my US credit card. I always opt for the zero deductible full coverage insurance and that insurance is carried by the rental company, not by me.

If the insurance company didn't cover me my credit card company would have to. The credit card company has recourse against the international rental company. If the rental companies got very far out of line they'd lose their ability to take credit cards (Visa, MC, Amex) and they'd be out of business. That's big hammer that I don't have to swing.

Cheers.

Thank for reply. From what i know, all about the international franchise companies just only do cover the "thai national standard rate", mean mostly just only max 50.000 THB. No matter where (UK,USA,THai.....)you do your booking from.

Don´t know how it is in USA, but like i know in Europe the Credit Card Company don´t cover anything.

That´s why i just hope there in Thailand it´s any Company who offer a additional Insurance.

If you plan to rent from Chiangmai I would recommend the company I have always used : North Wheels Car Rent Chiangmai .

They have a good insurance; the maximum deductible is 138 USD . see what is on their web site:

Insurance

The renters are responsible for the first US$138.00 (5,000 Baht) deductible of each and every accident involving damage to or loss of the vehicle, regardless of fault.

Personal accident insurance provides coverage up to US$142,858.000 (5,000,000.00 Baht) and US$4,296.00 (150,000.00) for injury.

Just Google: northwheels chiangmai .

Enjoy your trip !

Thank for reply. The Conditions from nothweels mean only that they will cover all about YOUR car......like damage or loss. But they don´t tell anything about in case there is a third Party involved. Standard in Thailand, in case there is a third Party involved is 50.000 THB,,,,i think it´s same here.

For example...you do an accident, there is a Truck involved....Truck Driver he need to go hospital.....and his Truck is broken.....costs totally 1. 300.000 THB. In this case the Standard Insurance in Thailand only pay 50.000 THB.....everything up is you have to pay.

Hertz offer zero-excess cover as an optional extra at 214B/day, capped at 3210B per rental.

Standard cover seems to be 1MB, with 10,000B excess.

http://www.hertzthailand.com/EN/Terms.aspx

I have zero faith in small local companies here and would not trust what they claim to provide.

Hertz talk about the "Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW)". This Insurance don´t cover anything about the "Third Party", it only cover everything about YOUR car.

I don't think the 50k max coverage is correct.

But that´s fact. The most of the car rental companies in Thailand (no matter famous or not) seem like they do like this.

For example look here:

http://www.sixt.com/how-to-rent-a-car/thailand/

scroll down to the: "Third Party Insurance (TI)"....this what i talk about. Here you can see the max 50.000 THB.

Sixt is just only a example.....you also can look on other famous and don´t famous car rental comapies in Thailand and also around the world.

Seem like this 50.000 THB is the Standard coverage by Thai law.

Did a quick Google search for Thailand rental car insurance, on the first link, Budget, it says:

"Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) - Included in Net Rates". Cover for that is 3rd party property damage 5 mio Baht.

If it really were 50k Baht you'd be reading story after story after story about accidents where the (rental) car insurance was not sufficient.

Here i will give you next proof:

http://car-rental.sixt.com/rental-service/terms-conditions/

choose "Thailand" in the Button : "Pick up Country", press the "Show" Button. After that scroll down to the "Third Party Insurance (TI)".

The Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) Insurance only cover anything about YOUR car but not a Third Party Thing. Trust me.

If you have a proof that i am wrong, please let me see.

Again you're coming with the same company, even after I quoted you information from another website. And now you're saying they're lying.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong on both counts.

Don't forget the need for 1st class insurance that will cover bail bond (200,000 baht) in case of injury / death. Also means the insurance rep will assist with 'negotiations' with RTP. I know Avis in Thailand includes this cover, don't know about other rental companies.
