5,000 baht a day, Secret Shoppers, I've never seen a shopping bag.

I agree, they come on package tours and spend little more from my experience. As you said never seen a shopping bag and local businesses get little or nothing out of them

Last year I entered the LOS at Chiang Mai from Hong Kong. Two Chinese women blatantly cut in front of me in line at Immigration. I'd done my homework -- and said very very loudly, which is to say in the LOS, very rudely [but on purpose], "Back" in English, pointing to the back of the line like you would tell a dog to get off the couch. As they went, I said just as loudly in Mandarin "Everybody knows mainland Chinese have no manners".

I looked round at one point and there they were, "If looks could kill, etc." Such fun.

Now I know this doesn't concern Chinese tourists in Thailand but here in my city of Bristol there are 2-3,000 Chinese students and the only complaint people here have about them is that they don't attempt to integrate into British life or socialise with local people. They spend a lot of money ie in uni fees/rent but don't seem to otherwise. Of course, these students come from mostly wealthy families which makes some wonder why they are such skinflints.....

The only good part about the Chinese coming is that the Thais might start looking at Farang in a better light.... Maybe !!!

There are quite a few falang who visit Thailand who'll never be looked at in a better light... I've seen more than enough arrogant, ignorant, rude, ill-mannered, cantankerous Caucasians here. Bad manners know no boundries.

There is always a price to pay, take it or leave it, as the bar girls say, ''one beer or two,it's up to you''

On the up side there will no doubt be more than a few Chinese going home with tales of being ripped off, raped or just your usual dose of aids

- Cultural misunderstandings ???

A university professor from Beijing claimed during the climax of the SARS epidemic, "Chinese have a 3000 year old culture of spitting!"

So, who has a problem to understand the other ones "culture"?

There's no cultural misunderstandings when one craps where ever they wish. I love it! Hehe

I wonder if the Thai's are thinking, yes, come, spend your money, but go home soon...

Thailand is the Chinese Ibiza and Benidorm to Brits.

I've never seen a half dressed, p155ed up, Chinese girl throwing up in the gutter here.

We British lost our culture when cucumber sandwiches went out of fashion, Jesus how i hate the country of my birth.

Maybe not, but you WILL see a Chinese girl squatting down crapping or urinating stone cold sober on the sidewalk in broad daylight.

Have a look in the planes going back, everybody heavily loaded with shoppings.

They definitely spend much more then many farang

I think they buy something on the last day, that's why u see shopping bags or it would go in Luggage, just an observation, technically they are buying something, coming from USA, they are burdened with boxes and boxes of stuff, but a more affluent Tourist from the State's

Last year around 4.6 million Chinese nationals visited Thailand, with the average tourist spending 5,500 baht ($160) per day -- more than the average European visitor.

If you keep repeating the same dross over and over, maybe you will believe it, but you are fooling nobody.

Without exception, every Thai business I have spoken with, tells the same story.... The chinese are everywhere, but they don't spend any money.

According to the above figure, a family of three would be spending USD $480 a day. Complete fiction.

Your correct but also wrong. The Chinese are big spenders but they don't spend on the same things the European or UK tourists spend on. For example they like to book tour packages so they pay for 4 or 5 star hotels, go around in tour busses, have tour guides and have inclusive meals at their hotels. So the only thing they spend on will be presents for the people back home. Compare this with a European that fly in stay in a 3 star hotel or guesthouse, buy street food, use tuk tuks, hang around at bars and take memories back home.

All of the booking would be dont back in China so again Thailand does not really gain from it

I have just returned from my holiday to Singapore. I used to like Singapore. Now that the mainland Chinese have arrived en masse, itnsucks. I got back to Phuket and a thai girl started speaking very rudely about me. I was no where near even in her vacinity. Thank you to the security guard at the airport who interveened on my behalf.

She was still showing off her great ill manered languagenskills to her friends, before Inaddressed her in Thai language and told her that at 21 y/o she should learn respect for elders, no matter who they are. Then she called me an animal. I told her what she is in Thai and the srcurity guard did the same.nshenwas showing off to her friends. Is this what has become of thailands youth, disgusting ....? I am lucky I learnt manners when I was young.

Any tourist brings in a few baht. The Chinese tourists are in large tour guide groups. I remember when the South Koreans and Japanese did the same. They will soon learn to come on their own and then they will encourage more to visit. If we can teach them not to spit in public, not to barge in queues , (had to look queue up in the dictionary lol) then they will become ordinary tourists. And Thailand will teach them how to cook real Asian food. Cheers

Lots of the usual anti-Thai remarks from people who ought to just go back to their lovely ideal countries if they don't like it here! YOU WILL NOT be missed, be assured about that!! I'm actually IN China at the moment and I wouldn't want most of 'em in my back yard, either!! But what's a country supposed to do when it needs the money such tourists bring? Yeah, I know some Thais can leave a lot to be desired, but then which country doesn't have too many a***holes?.. plenty making comments on here 'pot calling kettle black [as already quoted] for sure'!!! :P

Another Thais looking down their nose at their neighbours non-story.

You are a complete fool and there is a non-story between your ears.

China didn't issue etiquette books just because of some problems in Thailand, but because of the same story everywhere, including when tourists in their own country.

But don't let that get in the way of a racist all too common TV Thai basher

There are literally millions of them coming, and there are about half a dozen stories. Meanwhile, every day, farang and other sexpats are paying for sex in Pattaya, but apparently this is ok, as though that is culturally acceptable in Thailand. The thais are happily bashing the Chinese in the press every day.

Tourists of all colours and descriptions are causing so called offence everyday, not just the Chinese. It is a complete and utter non story considering the amount of tourists coming from China at the minute. Yes the Chinese clear their throat a lot, and go around in large groups. Chill out people, or you are going to have a bit of a hernia trying to pick them all up to your standard. They have maybe 300 million people with enough people to take a package tour now. So, all the hectoring in the world isn't going to bring them up to your precious Thai standards.

As for that, lets not make me laugh about how wonderful and principled Thais are. I have seen the absolute cream of the crop completely bemused in boarding school in the UK with etiquette. Difference is, it is considered rather low class when you have invited someone into your house, to point out their failings and hector them about their behavior. Its all very low class.

Oh, we would invite the neighbours over, but you know they are just so badly mannered. Ooooooh!

Was reading this earlier today .Well you reap what you Sow

Hang on? You said before the tourist numbers entering Thailand were fake because you stated a hotel room next to you was empty. And you reinforced that with your friend staying at another hotel had an empty room next to him as well.

So with all due respect you agree you were wrong before then when questioning tourist arrival numbers?

Have a great day my friend.

Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping meeting then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Beijing in 1984

Notice his spittoon. This is a tradition mostly among older Chinese.

The author, James Clavell, in his novel, "Noble House" described the behavior as wanting to clear evil 'spit gods' from their body, hence the noise associated with the behavior. He was acknowledged as an authority on Oriental culture.

Exactly, spitting out phlegm was even written up in Mao's little red book as a vital part of good health. Even more necessary considering the amount of smoking and pollution over there. That along with believing that flies spread disease, and that swallows eat grain so must be killed.

Its still a tradition among the countrysiders, but the citybound spit a lot less in the last 10 years. That said, watching the Aiyee freaking out when there was a fly in the office was quite a shock the first time.

Ahh, the love-it-or-leave-it cub scouts finally checking in. What took you so long?! Threads like this just wouldn't be the same without the preachy, self-righteous deniers showing us the straight & narrow and letting us know who's worthy to stay and who must leave. Like, fer sure, dude! clap2.gif But you really have kind o' managed to miss the original point of this particular topic, which was about Thai outrage at the Chinese, not farang outrage at the Thais. No matter. You must never miss an opportunity to launch ad hominem when you see something you disagree with. thumbsup.gif 'Must be particularly satisfying - on some imponderable level - ordering people to leave. Even if they will, of course, completely ignore you... cheesy.gif

Just a little bit about James Clavell. He was shot down in a Hurricane aircraft by the Japanese, near Singapore in 1942. His book "King Rat" tells of his life as a prisoner of war in Changi war camp in Singapore. (150,000 were interred, 15,000 survived) He then wrote a few historical novels about life in Japan and China. They were/are good stories. But they are stories, they have no basis of fact. The Chinese population mostly expectorate in public. When they spit in foyers and other pubic areas, it is not acceptable. That was then and this is now, do not make excuses for them. Next you will be talking about how it is their culture and we should accept this as being normal.
