A regular visitor to Chiang Mai and frequent bar companion at Mad Dog, Greg Lowndes, has "collapsed and died in Osaka. He was only 49 years old."

This is sad sad news. Met him last time in Chiangmai, knew him from Mad Dog and some other places, and he invites me to visit him in Osaka. Does anybody know what happened ? I know he get big surgery sometimes ago...

I am saddened to add a family friend to this list. David Sailsbury passed away peacefully while watching the sunset from his condo last night.

Dear Friends

As you may know David Salisbury was cremated on Thursday.

David’s wife would like his friends to know that there will be a further chance to honor David’s memory and I append below the various details:--

On Thursday 28th of this month January. At 10 A.M

There will be a reception and Buffet lunch at Hillside 4. On Floor 2.

At 1P.M. Pre-booked taxis will leave Hillside 4 to drive to The Temple on Doi Suthep where there will be a further small service and the internment of David’s ashes.

Yes, I could never remember his last name even though I knew him for many years.

I would have to guess on the "Lucky Glucky" thing as I never heard it. We always called hin John the Watch Smuggler and he got some Thai bigshot to escort him through customs every time he flew into the country. Would that have anything to do with his nickname? :)

khunphil,

I have been told that Greg suffered a stroke and passed away, I don't have any more details.

If you use Facebook and have Greg listed as a friend then you should be able to see tributes and photos from friends and relatives on there.

Don't forget John of expensive watch "transporting" fame. A very clever guy who got his tilac in the end.

Another John has gone.

A very short elderly chap with a slightly curved spine, very 'far back/plummy' English and courteous manner. He passed away last week in Mae Sai and the UK Consulate is in touch with his family in England.

John Schweider, a former British Army officer (despite the surname!) was a regular on the bar scene with his long term partner Terry, who died a year or two ago.

They said they had run successful antique shops in England, and sometimes introduced themselves as father and son. Thus they became known as 'Steptoe and Son' in some drinking circles.

For a few months they ran a small bar/restaurant named The Greenhouse on Huay Kaew Rd, almost opposite The Pub. With Indian food from 'Lek' and his wife Santosh, now running Bombay Restaurant at CM Gate.

There IS a 'Citylife' feature in this, as we seem to be going through a bad patch of losing interesting, even "colourful" expat characters.

Yesterday saw the funeral of Arthur Edmund-Jones who, with his very pleasant Thai wife lived in Royal Lanna, the block behind The Red Lion.

Arthur was noted for wearing a pill-box hat and rather military style tunic, with his name in Thai on a metal badge. He once told me that he had been a publisher in London, especially successful with a directory sold only to the drivers of black cabs. It listed all the restaurants, hotels & night clubs which paid the cabbies commissions for punters brought in.

After a long time away, I last met him only 2 weeks ago by accident in the street. He looked well, and pleasantly declined to shake hands due to the possible exchange of germs.

One more character down. But many more to go.........

For those who knew him. THe Scot who owns the Panniya Guesthouse near the Arcade Bus Station dies yesterday. I have not met him but he must have been a very special person as he did a wonderful job in making the guesthouse fully accessible to peoploe with disabilities.l I am sure he will be missed.

I couldnt guess I was going to know someone from this thread, I stayed at Panniya Guesthouse two years ago and I remember him. Actually I was thinking about him yesterday as I was searching for a place in CM for this week, but booked for an Hotel this time as I had more budget. He was a kind man.

RIP all of them

Was a bit of a start when I saw this morning that there was activity on this thread, as there no activity for some time now . Anyhow it was a releif to see that it just conversation.

But just a few minutes ago, I was informed of another friends passing. I'm sure there are some out there who knew him.... His name is Herman Calaert, A Belgium National.

I first met Herman some 10+ years ago when he first came to Thailand. He was a semi permanent guest at my place for about a year. Herman was semi retired on a Belgium Disability program. He eventually went on to open a little bar/restaurant in the Nite Market.

Some years ago he opened a more traditional restaurant/bar called The Oasis. a few metres off Thaepae Rd. just west of the AIS Telephone place.

I hadn't seen him for some time as we both had our own committments, but whenever I would ride by I would always see him sitting at one of his outside tables BS'ing with someone.

Not quite sure of the cause of death, other than I was told that close to a month ago, he became ill and returned to Belgium for treatment and ultimately passed on a couple days ago.

If any of you out there knew Herman and know more details of his more recent times please add to this thread....

In any event, Herman old friend, RIP

Gonzo

No MM, in the Nite Mkt he used to have a little place down in the sewer if you know what I mean. I may be mistaken but I think the place you mention was 2 guys, and they had a run in with the law catching them working without a WP.

Herman had a disability caused by a motorcycle accident years ago , way before coming to CM.. This left him walking with one short arm crutch..... I would guess his age to be mid to late 50's now.

His last place, The Oasis, was on the soi [1 way from Chiang Moi, to Thaepae rd.... I think the same soi as Verichai Ct. but just about 2 bldgs, from Thaepae Rd.

If anyone could confirm, but I was told yesterday that Maurice, from True Blue died a few years ago.

Does anyone know if this is true? The people who told me did know him and were adamant, but he's not mentioned here and no one else has ever mentioned it

Maurice lives back in Oz, last I heard he was still alive. Sadly the his brother David's wife, a Thai lady, was killed in a car accident in Australia some years ago.

Martin West, brother of David, the original owners of Domino's (later True Blue) died but that was about 13 or 14 yrs ago.

Edit: Was your source local or in Oz?

Local. A woman I didn't recognise but she said she recognised me as she used to be a cashier at Pong's bar in bar beer center about 17 years ago. I also asked the owner of Lucky and she said he'd died about 5 years ago.

I heard 3-4 years ago he was back in Australia and not interested in coming back to Thailand so I was very surprised when they told me he'd died in Chiang Mai.

I'd heard about Martin, which was a real shame. I remember David (West) going a bit nuts and then heading up to the village. Didn't keep in contact as I don't go near people involved in drugs (not exactly revealing a secret as he was jailed for possession of maijuana!)

Anyone who had a wife like David (West) would have had good reason for going nuts.

I think your source must be mistaken. If he had died in Chiangmai the Australian consul would have been notified, and everybody else would have heard about it. I have heard nothing.

I got an email from him last Wednesday. He didn't say anything about being dead. But then again, Maurice is that sort of a guy.
