Are the various electrical cable brands here all up the same spec or are the more expensive brands worth paying a bit extra for ?

Any brands to avoid ?

Thanks.

I would say that Bangkok Cable is probably the most widely respected brand, but it's also the most expensive....

As Crossy notes, cheaper brands like Yazaki and Fuhrer are probably just as good - but that's about as cheap as I'd go though.

Is there really a cable manufacturer called Fuhrer? Owned by a little despot with a toothbrush moustache perchance?

EDIT Yup, there is http://www.fuhrerwire.co.th/

And what is the difference between VAF and THW?

VAF is the flat, PVC insulated and sheathed cable (2 or more cores) used for running surface mounted. Two PVC layers, the insulation and the sheath which provides mechanical protection.

THW is single core PVC insulated (one PVC layer, no sheath) which must be run in conduit for mechanical protection.

Crossy, The German word "Fuhrer" has nothing to do with Nazi Germany. The word means "Leader" and the man with the "toothbrush moustache" was the German leader that time. A train driver in German is called "Zug Fuhrer" (train leader). The director from a company is called "Geschafts Fuhrer" (company leader) The word "Fuhrer" is just a normal word in German language.

Arjen.

I know Arjen, my (evidently poor) attempt at irony considering just how Thailand views pretty well everything to do with Hitler and the Nazi party.

I would not have been remotely surprised if the Fuhrerwire company had some form of Nazi imagery on their website.
