Mozilla blocks Flash as Facebook security chief calls for its death!

Just started to post the same topic just now as I noticed my FF was regularly getting the Adobe Flash warning.

Mozilla blocks Adobe's Flash from Firefox, Facebook says program should be killed

The Internet wants to kill Adobe's Flash once and for all.

Mozilla and Facebook, along with other online communities, are joining forces to have Adobe kill its Flash program in order to make the Internet a safer and more proficient place.

The Mozilla Firefox web browser is the latest to deny any access to Flash. This week, the head of Firefox support Mark Schmidt went on Twitter to announce that all Firefox browsers would automatically block Flash.

nydailynews

"BIG NEWS!! All versions of Flash are blocked by default in Firefox as of now," Schmidt wrote.

Yesterday afternoon Flash Player wasn't blocked, but then when I got home in the evening I noticed the blocked messages. At first I wasn't sure who or what was blocking Flash Player. I suspected my antivirus software! Then I noticed there was a new version (18.0.0.209).

Earlier in the day I noticed version 18.0.0.203 was installed and it kept crashing. So I updated Flash Player. The installation was radically different from previous installation and required a reboot!

After I rebooted and was testing the new version I noticed the headlines, then I ran accoss this:

Mozilla Firefox temporarily blocks Flash by default

Since that decision was made, however, Adobe appears to have updated its Flash player to version .209, which is not blocked. Adobe had previously said it would fix all known vulnerabilities later this week; It’s not clear if version .209 fulfills that goal.
“Our blocklisting policy doesn’t call for us to block [version 18.0.0.209], provided it is sufficiently patched,” Mozilla’s head of Firefox support Mark Schmidt told PCWorld via Twitter.

Personally I find Flash Player extremely bad regarding security and bugs for years!

I was hoping HTML5 would catch on much quicker!

Maybe it might die with the release of Windows 10 with a new browser just around the corner! rolleyes.gif

Adobe are nothing but a cancerous disaster and every one of their products should be banished from every computer on the planet.

Being a photographer I disagree and Photoshop and Light Room are still some of the best tools available for us. Now if you are referring to their Internet products ... smile.png

I'm a little backward on this stuff...

I thought "Flash" was required to play videos such as YouTube. Am I way behind on this?

YouTube switched over to HTML5 a while back as I remember when they gave the option as to which you wish to use. Anything that can be done in Flash can be done in HTML5.

Many extremely popular sites still use flash and show no obvious signs of switching. Video chat type sites like Omegle are an example.

Yep and that around 22 years ago

Flash seems to be one of the worst vectors for vunarabilities of all.

Adobe is fairly well known for Photoshop.;

Maybe their reprort card could read good but could do better.

Have to disagree with you there. Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro are two of the best photo and video editing programs out there.

Now I do agree that Flash is a dog that should be killed, as is Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Cloud.

Update to the latest version and the warning is gone.

Yeah, and it seems to be fairly decent too! No crashes yet and video clips load faster without buffering.

Best version I have seen in years!

Maybe blocking previous versions made Adobe scramble to get their act together for now. We'll see...

Actually, a regular poster on these very forums developed Acrobat. I'm not going to 'out' him though tongue.png

That would be against the law :P

In any case, he is long retired, so he can play the "McAfee Defence" :D

Why ? Because he might get banned ? wink.png

555 :)

To be fair, what he developed ranks as one of the biggest innovations in computing, ever. Truly visionary. Name one person that's used a computer and doesn't know what a PDF file is... Try to remember what HTML looked like back then too :)

It's changed quite a bit since the time it was originally conceived though.

remove .de from the link.

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Better?

Yes.

But I warn other users to take note of the sneaky, pre-checked "Also give me McAffee Anti-Virus" option in the Install page.

It's a minefield out there.

Danke.

And if by accident or fate you left that option checked, please refer to post #20 tongue.png

The getadobe.com site has done that for years! Before you download you have to un-tick the free offers. Then they won't sneak that stuff in the downloaded installation file.
