Buckingham Palace defends footage of Queen giving Nazi salute as a child

Kevin Rawlinson

LONDON: -- Buckingham Palace has criticised the Sun newspaper for publishing footage of the Queen giving the Nazi salute as a child. The palace said that the paper had exploited footage that appeared to have come from the monarch’s personal archives.

The Sun ran an image from the grainy footage from the early 1930s of a young Elizabeth playing with her sister Margaret on its front page on Saturday. The two children are accompanied by their uncle Edward – then Prince of Wales – and their mother in the gardens of Balmoral. The footage shows Elizabeth, at the apparent instigation of both her uncle and her mother, raising her right arm straight in salute to the camera.

A palace spokesman said: “It is disappointing that film, shot eight decades ago and apparently from her majesty’s personal family archive, has been obtained and exploited in this manner.”

Why would you keep such a picture in your personal achieve?

Awful, even if it was 80 years ago.attachicon.gifQueen_makes_Nazi_s_2417587n.jpg

Awful at 80 years ago, before the holocaust, before the invasion of Poland, before a lot of nasty stuff? Why? Attitudes change with the times.

People used to say "nigger" in those days.Kids played cowboys and injuns. Soldiers talked about the fuzzy wuzzies. There were lots of norms that are today seen as inappropriate, but back then were just very ordinary.

exploited in this manner

Exploited in terms of seemingly trying to assert that Elizabeth seriously knew all the ramifications behind the gesture, yes. However, Eddy was buddy with the regime in Germany and that is what the 'palace' probably objects to being outed more widespread, the most.

Why wouldn't YOU. It had no meaning for the Queen then and it has no meaning now.. Her uncle on the other hand was a complete knob head!

Perhaps a reminder of what arrogant self centred people can be like and strive to NOT emulate them!

The Nazi salute became obligatory in Germany in 1933 and I imagine that this would have been reported in the UK at the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_salute#From_1933_to_1945

So this photo could just be of a family taking the p*ss out of a bunch of fascists. I might have done the same had I been there.

30+ years later people were still doing that without many complaints:

There is also the possibility that they were doing the Olympic salute:

No not taking the p*ss, many of the royals were nazi sympathisers at the time.

why shouldn't they use that salute at that time and show a liking for Germany and its government. this was from a time when Europe was at peace before the second world war and many other people in Europe and America were impressed by the German state at that time

What a ridiculous story only fit for a rag aimed at imbeciles.

This was before the war during a time when Germany was becoming a great success story.

People who knee-jerk disgust at this picture are the kind of unthinking sheep who have made the UK the 'politically correct' farce it is today.

It's no secret that the royals were going to do a deal with Hitler should he have taken the UK, and no secret that they sympathised with his cause. Sadly the British people are too weak and foolish to denounce this line of traitors, thieves and impostors.

There is nothing wrong with playing cowboys and indians today. How is it inappropriate?

Do you have ANY proof of that at all? Links, authenticated stories, anything other that what you have just said?

I could equally say that it's no secret that kennypowers is a (fill your own word in) and there would be no proof or truth either, only my word.

The point is not the ridiculous picture, it's that a British newspaper has the right to publish it. Congratulations to English freedom of speech.

What have I done???? I have given a like to a post praising the UK????????? Maybe I'm going senile, and in case anyone says I already am. I am not.

So what !! There are a lot more important things the Sun needs to report on, like how Immigrants and a certain is taking over Europe a block and a city at a time until.

Further, I believe the Nazi Salute was with the palm down arms lower and pointed at their flag or person of higher rank.

I am from USA, but have utmost respect for the Queen and none for our present leaders !!

Why do you ask what drugs he is taking? Can't remember any photos of my parents giving the nazi salute.

Oh dear, I thought you elders would have known all this stuff. Do you not wonder why "the Palace" is so protective of all its documents, photos and archives in general?

Moreover, surely some of the old boys on here can remember the scandal after the war, of which after the government and royals had to go all out to re-brainwash the public into accepting and respecting the royals again after all their flirting with Hitler.

Anyway....

The Nazis regarded the duke, who had abdicated over his affair with divorced American Wallis Simpson, as a potential ally and a possible head of state for a subjugated Britain. But his flirting with Hitler's regime threatened to undermine years of work by the royal family to distance themselves from their German roots.

Family members of Prince Philip, who is from the house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg, were unabashed supporters of Hitler and the Nazis.

Brother-in-law, Prince Christoph of Hesse, was a member of the SS. He piloted fighters that attacked allied troops in Italy.

Several weeks before Germany invaded Poland King George VI and his wife, the late Queen Mother, sent Hitler a birthday greeting.

“I never thought Hitler was such a bad chap,” said George’s brother, the former King Edward VIII, who became the Duke of Windsor after abdicating in 1936. Edward made this remark in 1970 when it was widely known that Hitler and the Nazis had directly and indirectly killed more than 40 million civilians and soldiers.

The Nazis planned to install the Duke as leader after a successful conquest of Britain. The former head of British naval intelligence said Hitler “would soon be in this country, but that there was no reason to worry about it because he would bring the Duke of Windsor over as king.”

Other royals were also connected to the Nazis. Baron Gunther von Reibnitz, the father of Princess Michael of Kent, was a party member and an honorary member of the SS. The brother of Princess Alice was a Nazi who claimed Hitler had done a “wonderful job.” Charles Edward was placed under house arrest after the war for his Nazi sympathies. He was sentenced by a denazification court, heavily fined and almost bankrupted.

Much of the British gentry also held a fondness for Hitler and the Nazis. Lord Halifax was infatuated with Hitler and Sir Oswald Mosely served as the leader of the British Black Shirts.

Montagu Norman, 1st Baron Norman, the Governor of the Bank of England from 1920 to 1944, was a close friend of the German Central Bank President Hjalmar Schacht. Schacht was an ardent supporter of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party and served in the Nazi government as President of the Reichsbank and Minister of Economics. Norman played a key role in transferring Czechoslovakian gold to the Nazis in March 1939.

Oh, and some more...

The duke and his wife, Wallis Simpson, had visited Germany in 1937 and were taken to meet the Führer. When they left, Hitler said of Simpson: "She would have made a good Queen."

Suspicions lingered that if Hitler had successfully invaded Britain, he might have tried to make the duke king again. Confidential files released in 2003 revealed that Nazi officials thought the duke was "no enemy to Germany" and would be the "logical director of England's destiny after the war".
