BANGKOK: -- PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha should reshuffle his Cabinet, especially his economic ministers, to regain the faith of the people after the government's failing performance dented its popularity, the spokesman of the National Reform Council (NRC) whip said yesterday.

Wanchai Sornsiri said reports about |proposals for a national government or a Cabinet reshuffle reflected the declining |popularity of the government, which let the people down by failing to ensure efficient |management.

The government also failed to solve economic problems, Wanchai said, and the people were losing their patience. Consequently, the government's opponents have gained more support and have become provocative.

"Although a minister who is shifted is not necessarily guilty, the changes still have to happen to show the government is considering the people's desires," he said.

Politics is about public sentiment. If the changes can make people feel better, then there's nothing wrong with that, he said, adding that something has to be done to avoid angering the people and further obstructing the realisation of the three-step road map.

"No matter how powerful guns and [military] power are, they are no use if the people have lost their faith [toward the government]." he added.

Meanwhile, Suriyasai Katasila, deputy dean of Rangsit University's Social Innovation College and director of the Thailand Reform Institute, said a Cabinet reshuffle was likely to happen due to ministers' performance failures, putting more direct pressure on Prayut.

Maintained popularity

Suriyasai said the government maintained its popularity because the people were still frightened of political fragmentation. However, there would be more challenging indicators toward the government, especially its capability of governing.

However, the quota given for the Cabinet reshuffle must not be used to conduct an Army reshuffle only, he added. "The PM has to be brave in the right way, to eliminate the criticism levelled against him earlier."

He also suggested that such a reshuffle, if it happens, must bring about economic stability, public wellbeing, national reform and reconciliation "to create a strong foundation for Thailand in the long term."

Despite his criticism, Suriyasai also praised the government's initiative in major issues such as forest encroachment, the lottery, human trafficking and fishery.

Meanwhile, a Suan Dusit poll has revealed that 72.88 per cent of 1,261 people surveyed across the country wanted politicians to be honest and faithful to the government, while 71.69 per cent thought politicians shouldn't 'attack' the government or create any |provocation.

No one knows how to do it. It's not a card game to pull the aces. Thailand had a good run despite the rest of the world down spiriling.

Thailand can not keep on going, down cycles are natural part of any economy.

I'm quite curious what the other 27.12 percent said though.

My guess is that they only "polled" about 72.88 people.

I guess it's a little too late even if you draw in the best people for the cabinet. Leadership is important for success and herein lays the problem. Prayuth should step aside for a national government for the good of the country.

I would say it is easy to get the people back on your side. Have an election ASAP. Not rocket science. But the way things are going they are going to mirror Burma and their style of so called democracy.

To reshuffle he will need a deck with more than 52 cards in it. His present deck is filled with some real "cards" Starting to look like the old shell game where is the pea. Reminds me of a old Western advertisement "Show me the beef" The search for the pot of gold in "Finian's Rainbow" would better to get the public onside again than a reshuffle. Yes thats what we need here a good old fashion treasure hunt.

Whether PM Prayut reshuffles won't have an influence on Thai sentiment. PM Prayut leads by rule of law not democratic principles & in many ways, some countries are better ruled than led by an elected Gov't. The majority of Thais are better being ruled, than given democratic choices; have difficulty making choices, even in day to day sense. Their major concerns are about food on the table & paying next bill; not politically motivated & follow lead of kaman or paternal leader.

With almost absolute power in his hands, he still manages to mess it up. Should have been more tuned in to public opinion. Should have gone easy on those pesky students. It gets nastier the longer they prolong their stay in power. But is it difficult to get off the tiger once you are on its back.

Clear statement.

The PM should spend more time with progressive people,

and must sort out all, which are in the way of progress.
There is no reason to hold on people, who do not respect the laws and/or are corrupt.
