Thailand has climbed to 28th place in the 2024 "Best Countries in the World" ranking by US News & World Report, marking a one-spot improvement from the previous year. The ranking, developed by US News & World Report in partnership with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and global communications firm WPP, is based on insights from approximately 17,000 respondents across 89 countries, gathered between March and May. This global assessment evaluates various factors, including cultural heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, adaptability, quality of life, and business friendliness. It also considers social progress, soft power, and potential for future growth. Switzerland claimed the top spot with a perfect score of 100, followed by Japan in second place and the United States in third. The top ten also included Canada, Australia, and several European nations, reflecting their strong economies and high living standards. In Southeast Asia, Thailand leads in 28th place, outperforming regional neighbors like Malaysia at 38th and Indonesia at 41st. Singapore, however, holds the highest regional rank at 14th. The report highlights Thailand’s strong agricultural base, competitive manufacturing sector, and thriving tourism industry, which contributes about 7% to its GDP. Despite tourism’s supportive role in the economy, these sectors are key to the country's resilience. Thailand's steady rise in the rankings underscores its dynamic cultural heritage and growing economic potential, making it an attractive destination for both tourists and investors, reported The Nation. You can also use the website below and submit/upload the necessary forms online (DD 2642 and hospital paperwork). I have been submitting online since 2019. I started using Microsoft Edge because I was having trouble submitting the forms using Chrome. There are other apps you can use but I use the Cam Scanner app to create a pdf of the hospital paperwork (it's free for 3-5 scans per month)... the DD 2642 can be downloaded from the website below and saved to your desktop. Home (tricare-overseas.com) I typically get reimbursed after 30ish days of submitting online. A few lessons learned: - the hospital paperwork needs to be in English - the DD 2642 will need to be digitally signed (you can Google how to add a digital signature). If you submit claims for your spouse, you can set up a digital signature for them also. - Hospital paperwork: medical certificate, summary statement of expenses (doctor's fee), itemized receipt (list of charges), and the credit card receipt - Using the Cam Scanner app, you don't need to create a different file for each piece of paperwork. You can take a pic of the first document, then click the "Add" icon until you finish. - Recommend saving the DD2642 (ex. DD2642_(your last name)_3 Oct 2024); and the hospital paper work (ex. (your last name)_3 Oct 2024_appt). This naming convention helps me keep track to the different claims. - I save a "blank" DD2642 on my desktop but pre-populate the name, address, telephone number, date of birth, etc. Then you will only need to fill in the description of illness/injury, etc. then digitally sign it. If anyone needs specific steps to submit a claim on the Tricare Overseas link, you can send me a message....I've had to learn the hard way 🙂 -

Where to apply for non-immigrant 'O' visa (over-50) without drawing UK pension?
I'm a 58-year-old Brit. For the past few years I have been mostly living in Thailand on a non-immigrant 'O' visa which I extend for a year every November at Samut Prakan. I am NOT drawing a UK state pension. I keep 800k Baht in an SCB account. I am currently in the UK and due to return to Thailand in November, in time to renew the visa, but I am considering extending my UK trip past the renewal deadline date to January, and so will need to apply for a new non-immigrant visa. I was thinking of applying in the UK before I return to Thailand, but the Royal Thai Embassy London page at https://london.thaiembassy.org/en/page/retirement-visa states the visa is for "pensioner aged 50 or above with state pension who wishes to stay in Thailand for no longer than 90 days". And the Hull consulate (http://www.thaiconsul-uk.com/non-immigrant-visa-cat-o-pensioner.php) states that the visa is for persons "who are receiving a UK State Pension". So where can I get a non-immigrant 'O' visa just on the basis of being over 50, without the requirement of actually drawing a pension? I am happy to visit an embassy in a neighbouring S.E. Asian country in January if necessary, and actually have to go to Ho Chi Minh (where there is a consulate) anyway. Or should I get a tourist visa in the UK and convert it to a non-immigrant 'O' visa at Samut Prakan? I think I probably did that last time (a few years ago), but can't really remember.
