Government Application Center (GAC) launched as central website for 100 gov't apps

BANGKOK, 1 August 2015 (NNT) - The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has launched a central website "https://apps.go.th” in which over a hundred of government-run mobile applications are available for publicly free downloading, according to ICT minister Pornchai Rujiprapa.

The website is known as Government Application Center or GAC, administered by the Electronic Government Agency (Public Organization) (EGA). Mr.Pornchai said that the apps are able to run on both smartphones and tablets.

They are grouped into several categories such as health, society, travel and transport and education. Among the popular apps are Thai weather, NHC, DoctorMe, Highway Traffic, Traffic Voice, and KTB netback.

In parallel with the development of government apps, the ICT ministry is uploading around three hundred sets of official information, hoping to finish the process within September. Such an open source will facilitate people to have access to accurate information about the government’s work and utilize the information in their everyday life.

Buyer beware. You go to the website, click on the English icon and it all looks good, have a look at the Android app for "Thailand Highway Traffic" (traffic conditions, cameras etc) which says it's in English on the details box left screen, click through to the Play Store and again they have it listed it with Google as an English language app. All good, but then you discover that the only thing in English is the damn page headers! Why do they even bother? It's a source of constant amazement at the cursory use of English here, but claiming an app is in English just because the name of it is, is really taking the p...! These Thai Government computer programmers write code in English - what's so hard about making a real English version of the apps? Singapore will kick the pants off this country in a few months when the AEC becomes reality, especially in the technology arena. facepalm.gif

'the only thing in English is the heading'

I bet the report for that app confirms English language is available. Like the conference to improve teacher quality. Just for show.
