SIHANOUKVILLE (Khmer Times) – In what could have been his final act as Sihanoukville’s top politician, Jin Sarin signed an order last week that requires 26 vendors and their families to leave Ochheuteal Beach – this time for good.

Warned of forced eviction within a week, and in the presence of police, letters were delivered to families’ beach-side shacks telling them to leave and not return.

Jin Sarin, Sihanoukville’s widely-criticized city governor – often called mayor – told reporters last week he was simply acting on orders that came from higher up. Days later it was announced that Mr. Sarin would be replaced by Y Sokleng, a 31-year-old deputy governor from Phnom Penh, amidst widespread criticism of Mr. Sairn’s time in office at Sihanoukville city hall.
