Can an American get a marriage visa in Belgium?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I will be visiting family in Belgium when my current multi non-O expires. I got it last time in the USA. As I try to get the documents ready for Belgium it seems they only want to work with people from Belgium or Luxemburg. Do I have any shot at getting one? My Thai wife and kids will be with me. Any other option in Europe?

Assuming the above is a no go, my best option is to fly in to Thailand and get the free 30 days then go to that city in Laos where I can get the Multi entry? Are their any other ways to get what I need?

Been in Thailand 11 years but mostly had other visas. Not sure how to sort this out now that I'm no longer working.

Thanks.

Is there a list of ones that do not care for Europe? Or anyone know of anything close to Belgium?

Thanks

Belgium has borders with Holland, Germany, France and Luxembourg.

The French are known to be difficult even toward French citizens.

There is no list of "friendly" Embassy's/Consulates that I am aware of.

You may be able to get one in Belgium. Perhaps one of the 2 honorary would consulate would be the best. There is one in Liege and the other in Antwerp ( website http://www.thaiconsulate.be/portal.php?p=adresgegevens&afdeling=nl ). You should contact them for info.

There is not much info on the embassy website that I could find. http://www2.thaiembassy.be/th/%E0%B8%95%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%95%E0%B9%88%E0%B8%AD%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B2/

If you cannot get the visa there you could get a single re-entry permit (1000 baht) that would keep your current or next 90 day entry valid when you enter the country.

You could then get a new visa in Savannakhet when your return.

If you can meet the financial proof of 400k baht or 40k baht income you could get a one year extension of stay based upon marriage at immigration.

Okay thanks for the info. Going to look into all of this.

I sadly leave tomorrow so I'm not sure if immigration would be open. Assuming they are would I be able to get a single re-entry for 1000 Baht as my current visa is expired but I'm still on the 90 days they game me. The 100 baht re-entry is to make my full 90 days count? If so that seems like a good deal assuming they are open. I hate always having to buy a plane ticket flying out of Thailand when I can't show a visa.

I also have 400k plus in my bank. However I can't that sorted out before I go. Can I get that sorted once I come back if I end up having to do the free 28 or 30 day visa free entry?

If not going to Laos will not be the end of the world. Never been to that city.

Thanks for all the help.

The required documents for a Non Immigrant O visa listed on the embassy's website does include:

"A copy of your Belgian or Luxembourgish identity card"

There is no mention of alternative documents if you are not a citizen of Belgium or Luxembourg, which could indicate that they might not be willing to issue this type of visa to the OP.

Of course, the only way to know for sure is to ask the embassy. And as UbonJoe mentions even if the embassy will not issue the visa, honorary consulates are often known to be more flexible in such matters (since they are funded by the fees they collect for issuing visas).

You can get the re-entry permit for the current 90 day entry you have now. It will give you the same permit to stay date you have now when you enter the country.

As said you can the re-entry permit at either airport in Bangkok 24 hours a day.

If you get the re-entry permit you could apply for the one year extension after you return.

If you enter on a visa exempt entry you would need to go out to again to get a single entry non-o visa in order to apply for the extension.

Okay, thanks everyone. Not sure what I will do but you have given me a lot of options and a lot to think about.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Edit: One last question, the multi entry visa I can get in Laos is a 1 year visa correct? Just like the one I had from the USA? I leave the country often and getting an extension of stay might be a pain. I leave on average once a month. Thx

The advantage of the re-entry permit would be that you would be entering as if you had a visa. If you don't have a visa the airline can deny boarding your flight if you do not have a ticket out of the country within 30 days.

There's a Thai consulate in Stuttgart/ Germany and they're pretty much relaxed. If you want, I can call them, or send an e-mail to find out if they also issue a visa for Americans/Non European citizens.

Please see one link, with a downloadable application form.

Here's the application form, you can fill out online, also in English: http://www.thaikonsulat.de/img/visa_c.pdf

Here's their website ( one of them, written in German) http://www.thaikonsulat.de/index2.html

If they do issue a visa for you and you need some help regarding the language barrier, please page me. I'm not asking for any money.

It's about 470 km away from Belgium, no idea where you'll be staying.

P.S. I apologize for not mentioning the most important part. You'll easily get a one year Non-O visa based on your marriage without showing any financial proof. If it works out, you'll need your original marriage certificate, your wife's passport copy as well.

Best of luck and when you make it to Germany, please try some beer and wine.

It's Brussels and Antwerp/Berchem. Not Liege!

And for big issues you better go to Brussels.
