Trawler arrested in Krabi for illegal fishing

KRABI, 17 August 2015, (NNT) - Thailand Maritime Enforcement Coordination Center Area 3 arrested a trawler fishing illegally in the protected waters of Krabi province.

The arrest was made during a patrol over Ko Phraya Nak, Ko Bida and Ko Yao Yai islands. The patrol was organized by the center, coordinating a patrol vessel and special task force from the provincial Marine Department. The patrol was tipped off by locals about illegal activity in protected waters, which extend over 3,000 sq m.

Officials reported that not long after the patrol started, a trawler was seen fishing in the area using equipment banned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. Authorities arrested the captain and his five crew members, seized the trawler, illegal tools and 200 kg of captured marine animals.

The violators were charged with fishing in a restricted area without permission and await further legal proceedings.

No mention of who owns the vesswel or what flag it was displaying. . Thaland has or in process of providing for fines, arrest of crewand seizure of the vessel. Enforcement must be carried out to get these and like minded crews and their vessels off the oceans of the world.or there will be no ocean life left for human consumption

What are the regulations governing Thai-flagged slave fishing ships? For example, the Silver Sea 2 was seized by Indonesian Navy. Captain and crew will be charged, in Indonesia. However, the Thai owner is Silver Sea Reefer Co, which owns at least nine refrigerated cargo ships in Thailand. It said it is not involved with the fishermen. What shame they bring down on Thailand, these Thai owners within the trade .

If not mestaken it is Indonisia who is destroying about 70 odd vessel, some Thai owned and flagged. The owers and their partner companies who are financing these operations are the one to go after. These are the ones who are responsible for the slave labor , illegal nets in use, etc.

They should be the ones held responsible/ accountable for loss of market share and subsquent loss of jobs and possible gainful employement which will happen if these practices are allowed to continue.

It is the same on this side - all around the Gulf of Thailand. The illegal fishing trawlers are owned by the usual bunch, the Influentials, according to fishermen I have spoken with. The irony is, they are influential because they got rich, by greedily robbing Natures harvest.

Well the proposed 5 day a month holiday from fishing for all legally registered trawlerrs should make it easy to find the illegals during that time. Anything with a net in the water could be used as target practice by the navy and or airforce, impounded fined or whatever punishment is deemed necessary to enforce this proposed rule / law. It works in the real world i9n several countriesw already

This 5 day rest for fishing each month should be welcomed by ine and all.. The ocean life can sure use it , Thai territoral may become the HUB for sea life for 5 days a month anyway. I know whales talk to each other maybe word will spread via the fish grapevine / gossip circle
