Finally Made (Found) The Right Solution For My TOT Internet/..........

Sawasdee khrap,

I had some problems with the ordinary 10 MB Internet package from TOT, which I've got for a long time already. After many days without Internet, then a bad service, questions after questions, I made the (hopefully) right decision.

When some "technicians" came to my house to check the faulty Internet, one of them was mumbling something about a fantastic topic.

Fiber Optic Internet, right now a promotion until the end of this month. I usually pay 738 baht/ inc. tax, but never have 10 MB, what I'm paying for. The highest speed I could get was 8.7 MB/s.

Then off to TOT, asking them about their offer. Surprisingly will the Fiber package with 20 MB download and 10 MB upload speed be only 30 baht more per month than the older technology.

I paid 2,100 baht for a suitable wireless router ( usually 6 K), signed a new contract and the manager himself promised me that his guys will connect me to Fiber Optic tomorrow morning.

I've only head positive feedback about their "new technology" and look forward to a new Internet speed.

Please be aware that the promotion will end on the 31st of this month. 750 baht per month for the 20 MB package seems to be okay for me, but you can have a much higher speed.

I'll post how fast the Internet is and would deeply appreciate if those who're already using such a package would share their experience with the for Thailand new technology.

I assume that there won't be so many Internet- less days/hours and hope it will be a stable connection.

Thanks a lot in advance for any useful input and a great weekend for all experts/expats. Cheers.- wai2.gif

TOT needed four hours to get the installation done, but I finally do have the speed I wanted.Great.

20 MB for 750 baht ends on the 31st this month.

8.7 out of a 10MB/s ADSL connection isn't bad - the quoted figure is always a theoretical maximum, and you'll never get anything very close to it unless you live right next door to the exchange.

Impressive upload speed on your new connection, though.

I've tried it at several times and always have an optimal connection. And I pay 7 baht more per month, upgrading from 8.6 to 20 MB.

Also the upload speed was really low before. Gotta give them a heads and thumbs up. thumbsup.gif

My Windows 10 pro, together with the Fiber Optic 20 MB speed works great. Got constant 2.2 MB torrents running, plus many other applications open and no more freezing in, or other stuff I had before with my "old" connection.

I can only reckon to get the package for 750 baht/month, works like a charm....thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

You convinced me to try to switch to fiber. thumbsup.gif

I have an old TOT ADSL package at 590thb per month, 7Mbps I believe. Enough for my usage even for torrenting full HD movies, but recently the quality of the connection got pretty bad. Last few weeks it has been hard to web surf during office hours, 10 to 30 second to load a Thaivisa page for example!

Did you notice any decrease of speed during weekdays office hours?

Hi lostinisaan,

Did you pay an installation fee? If so, how much?
Was there a deposit fee for the fiber optic modem?
How about the router you bought, did they tell you it was specifically to go with fiber optic or was it that you just needed a new router. Could you please tell me the brand and model # of the router you got.

Looking at TOT's link for the promotion it appears (if I'm interpolating it correctly) that there is a 1000B deposit & a 5770B installation fee and another 100B fee for somthing else.
Anyone read Thai? Feel free to set me straight wai2.gif

Do they offer upgrade to all tot adsl users?

Or you were lucky to be near junction box?

They told me that even some smaller places than Sisaket have this technology available. Best would be to go to TOT in person, pay 2,100 baht ( instead of the regular 6000 baht) and get you hooked up. It's like Christmas to me.

TOT Fiber2U Promotion

Thanks

All you have to pay is a special promotion prize for the router, which is 2,100 baht for 20 MB. The installation is free, no matter how many meters of cable they have to get to your access point.

I had two guys working four hours to get me connected and I'm freaking happy about the result. Now I download a movie form a torrent site in three minutes. ( of course if enough seeders are available.)

Please be aware that the promotion ends on the 31st of this month. Please see the speed at 7 pm, where most people in the hood are online.

I feel like Santa Claus gave me a Porsche.....thumbsup.gif

P. S. There's something that you've got to use it for at least 6 month a year or so.

BTW, the Codon Bleau with decent cheese and ham inside, of course some fresh garlic as well, my wife just served tastes fantastic.

Life's good. thumbsup.gifthumbsup.gifthumbsup.gif

You realise those speeds are obtainable through ADSL and cable internet too, right?

Your old package was a bit crap, sure, but 20MBps download is not some new dawn of cutting edge technology.

Dude, I have more than twice of the speed I had before and 20 times more upload speed. And i only pay 7 ( seven) baht more per month.

Did I commit a crime by posting that? If so, please let me know what I did wrong. Thought such a post would help some people to make a very good decision, limited to the 31st of this month. Thanks in advance.

OP,

I see TOT advertising the plan on their billing envelopes.

Is it actually "fiber optics" all the way to your modem/router or is it still copper phone/DSL wire to your modem just as you had with your previous package? If it's still phone wire to your modem this I expect they have run fiber optics to new electronic junction boxes in your area/moobaan and then the connection from the electronic junction box is still copper phone wire.

Edit: also, would you mine running a speedtest us the testmy.net speedtester to see what the international speed it. Just go to it and click "Test My Internet+ Combined"...and please identify which location the test ran to noted at the top of the page...it will probably be a U.S. city. Thanks.

Maan, if I'd have an ordinary wire to my router, how the heck could I have such a speed?

They installed a fiber optics cable right to my router, otherwise it wouldn't make any sense, would it?

Not at all. Great that you're happy with your new service, but fibre is not the only way to get such download speeds. Just pointing out that the same thing can be achieved by other means, that people may very well already have installed in their homes.

Because you can get the same speed down a coax cable or phone line.

Dear Mods, please shut that down, it's getting out of order here. Message was delivered, no time for useless coaxial conversations. Thanks.

A good copper phone line can easily go up to around 20Mb in speed. This type of hybrid fiber optics/copper phone line internet setup is common....in fact they have it here in my Bangkok moobaan. Basically the final X-meters of the connection, which can sometimes be around a thousand meters, can be the plain old phone/DSL line. Think of it as a fiber optics "trunk" line running to your area/moobaan/building, but the final X-meters is still phone line.

Down a good old-fashioned cable this evening -

Could you please let us know how much you're paying for your 30 MB connection? BTW, my upload speed's between 10 and 11 MB's.

It comes as a bundle with a cable TV package - whole lot is something like 1700 baht or so. Your upload speed is impressive, as I remarked before. Do you upload a lot of large files?

Anyone who's currently a TOT Fibre2U customer can request to "Change Package" to the "New Inspire" Fiber2U promotional offer by either contacting

TOT Contact Center (1100)

or using the TOT eService website

Applications TOT Service -> TOT Fiber2U (Fttx) -> Change Package Fiber2U (Fttx)

then select the "New Inspire" section

(Note: Changing Package may obligate you to minimum 1-year subscription agreement).

hmm, I had to look up if this thread was an old thread or not

I got internet with True 30mb down, 3mb up

and along with Home Phone, Cell phone and Satellite TV I only pay 799 baht a month.

http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/product-service/product-sook/entry/2525

I believe it was some kind of promotion that started when I got it about 2.x month ago but it was on a one year basis.

it might be expired but yeah, it was the best deal for me. I guess 10mb up is better if you are uploading huge videos on youtube or something ;)

My wife talked to TOT at 1100 number. They say install starts from 5770 baht. They don't talk about waiving this fee with 1-2 year contract.

I was hoping to upgrade to fiber2u for house in village. However, I paid 8-10k for phone cable 4 years ago and I'm not willing to pay 5770 + extra length fiber cabling (no idea how far I'm from junction box, but I'm not far)

If they did not take 5770, I could pay fiber cable deployment fee over 200m (hopefully it is not too expensive?)

I have had TOT FTTH for about 18 months. Prior to that, ADSL was my only choice.

My house is about at the end of a Soi about 700M from the main road where the Fibre cables already were. One of my staff dealt with TOT and she was able to persuade them to run the 700M cable at their cost even though I would be the only subscriber.

I don't recall if or what the installation fee was but since it hasn't stuck in my mind it can't have been excessive.

It might be worthwhile finding out who makes the decision about that in your area and call them directly.

I know this is an old post, but unless I've missed something, I don't think there was a definitive answer regarding how far the fiber goes.

In the UK anyway (and a lot of other countries) the fiber optic service is usually sold as FTTC ot FTTH.

FTTC is Fiber To The Cabinet, and then drops off to copper pair from the local cabinet into your home. Still a good speed usually, although the better one is:

FTTH Fiber To The Home, when there's fiber all the way into your house and into the router.

I'm only saying this, because TOT seem to be pretty vague when selling their 'Fiber 2 U' service. They describe it generally as FTTX which doesn't explain how far the route goes as fiber. Maybe it's to the cabinet, or in other case does it appear as FTTH? Does someone does know if FTTX is something specific?

My TOT connection (and all others that I know of) is Fibre Optic cable right into the house connecting directly to a Fibre modem or ONT. I'm not sure whether TOT also offers VDSL where cabling Fibre all the way isn't practical, but I've never heard of it.

In the western world it seems to me that FTTX is telecom marketing speak for a last mile connection that isn't really Fibre Optic but the provider knows that it doesn't sound as good to call it what it really is. I suspect that the marketing people at TOT don't get the nuance of that and think that FTTX sounds good.

From what I've read here, most Thai companies selling FTTx won't install directly in Condos, at least above a certain floor, and instead convert it to VDSL at the cabinet or condo telecom room. I don't know if it's because there is a height/weight limitation on vertical FO installations, or if they'd rather use existing copper to save labor/liability.

If you're subscribing to less-than 200mbps service I doubt the media conversion adds much of anything in the way of delay.
