I received a traffic ticket on the outskirts of Bangkok a few days ago whilst driving my own car. The Policeman did not speak any English and could not explain what I had done wrong. He wanted to see my (Thai) driving license and immediately started writing the ticket and gave it to me. I only showed him my driving license but never handed it to him so I still have it. I asked him where to pay the ticket but he only smiled back. After that I could move on, the stop took less than a few minutes.

I read on the forum that most people either get away with paying some tea money without a receipt or in some cases pay the fine on the spot with a receipt or get a ticket like me but the police man keeps the driving license. In the last case the fine has to be paid at the local police station to get the driving license back.

As mentioned I still have my driving license and have no idea where the police station in the area is where I got the ticket (perhaps its written on the ticket but I can't read or speak Thai). I would prefer to pay the fine at a nearby police station but not sure if that is possible? i.e. can I pay the fine at any police station?

Other question, what would happen if I do not pay the fine? Perhaps problems renewing my Thai license or when paying the annual car tax?

Thanks in advance for any useful advise.

Usually when you get a ticket the officer will take you driver license and it will be returned to you when you pay the fine. Have someone read the ticket for you. Certainly the name of the police station is noted. Tell us exactly where you got the ticket and someone may be able to identify which police station is involved.

The place to pay the fine is on the ticket, generally it will be fairly close to where you actually got the ticket. Is it to difficult to find a Thai that speaks English to translate the ticket for you? Last resort would be to get your insurance office to sort it out for you, cost you a smallish fee.

You do it in your local post office.

They then send it ticket and monies to the right place. Whether you have to pay the postage not sure about but they will tell you there.

Same goes if you get one through the post if you have been tagged on radar.

You do need to get a receipt though.

If they take your licence it's a different matter you then have to go to the police station that the copper has put on the ticket.

In your case it's just a post office jaunt.

I was caught on camera and police sent a letter detailing the offence with a picture to the address the bike was registered at, you pay the fine at the post office, you will have to pay for two envelopes, one to send the payment details, and a self addressed one for the receipt.

You should take the green book but all I needed was my drivers licence.

I don't think you're in the same position, just go to the police station closest to where you were given the ticket.

If you don't pay the fine, they will get you when you your pay road tax or renew your licence.

Perhaps someone can advise me about a similar problem? I received a traffic ticket in Pattaya (no international license) in February 2015 which I did not pay. I left Thailand in April. I left my scooter in Bangkok and recently sold it. The person I sold it to was advised when he went to transfer the registration that my name is on a list? Immigration? and I will be arrested for this unpaid fine.

I did similar in another country many years ago except mine was for a parking ticket, eight years later I was routinely stopped and briefly jailed as a result, posted bail and was in court next day. Expect similar unless you pay beforehand.

Why should the procedure used in a different country be expected here?

Fredob43. I didn't know that.. Thanks

Your welcome.

I didn't know either till the other month when a friend of mine had received several and I mean several radar tickets on a trip from BKK to C/Mai and back told me. I asked him how he pays and he said he gets the wife to go and do it at the post office like normal, seems he has had many before, the car is in the none to happy wife's name. But he has to pay out the cash. 500bt a go.

Try and take your thinking on this up a level:

The message is that ignoring tickets can creep up and bite you at a later date thus ignoring or avoiding them is not a good strategy, regardless of what the exact procedure is here. And whatever that procedure might be, I'm absolutely certain it doesn't include the Police ignoring the people who ignore the tickets.

Thanks for all the useful information on this topic.

Just to close out from my side. I went to the post office and paid my fine (400 baht) and 86 baht postal charges for the registered mail services, including 2 envelopes. I had to write my own address on one of the envelopes so I guess that the police will sent a confirmation that the ticket has been paid. In the meantime I have the receipt from the post office that I have paid and can also track the mail on the thailandpost.co.th website.

I also had the ticket info translated and there is indeed a police station address where to pay the ticket plus it also mentions that the ticket can be paid at a government post office.
