2 dead as pick-up hits motorbike in East Pattaya

PATTAYA: -- The driver and passenger of a motorbike lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday after their bike was struck head-on by a pick-up.

The crash occurred in Soi Chayapornviti 1 in East Pattaya just before 1am on Sunday and left two close-friends dead. Khun Paiboon aged 22 and Khun Arunruk aged 23 were pronounced dead-at-the-scene by medics and the driver of the pick-up who was uninjured, Khun Jirasak aged 25, was arrested and later charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Witnesses told Police that the pick-up was travelling towards the Maprachan Reservoir and overtook a slow-moving motorbike but failed to see a motorbike approaching in the opposite lane which was struck head-on by the pick-up.

I believe it is no excuse that the motor bike had no head-lights on. I believe that the court will decide that the pick-up driver should have seen the head-lightless motor bike. Thainess !!

These are the dangers to all of us that drive cars. Having no lights on a motor bike is not an excuse for colliding with a lightless motor bike. And a foreigner involved in such a collision, will probably have the book thrown at him.

I believe this is the same road where a family of 3 in a BMW lost their lives when the BMW tried to overtake a slow-moving car and ran head-on into a large truck.

I do have to wonder if the on-coming motorbike that was hit had a working headlight. I can't believe how many motorbikes ride around at night without working headlights on dark roads.

I'm am always looking for on-coming idiots who think they have the right to pass irregardless of me being in my lane. I am always being forced over to the far left by these entitled idiots, which include large buses.

I was driving around the lake myself at the weekend, at night, and realised how dangerous it can be. I was held up by light-less motorcycles, a couple with unlit side-cars, and even had to pull back as I spotted a motorcycle with no headlights in my lights. Of course no street-lights. It made me think my night-vision is becoming suspect. Making motorcycles have working lights would be beneficial.

If it was a pitchdark soi , like many , you have your eyes out not only for the bike you are overtaking , but straight ahead too. If some nitwit , rides with no light in this situation , they pay for it.

I lately counted from a restaurant in a suburb of Hat Yai all motorcycles/drivers, who either rode without a helmet, a tail- or headlight not working, or both. Roughly ten percent of all motorcycles passing by seemed to be ok, as you cannot see the condition of a brake, or the tire pressure. 90% of all riders either had no helmets, or no working tail- or headlight, or both. Sometimes one can hit the "jackpot" seeing three unprotected persons on one motorcycle with no head- or tail lights. If I would be with the traffic police, I would be rich in a very short time, just by doing some extra shifts in the late evening.

that they expect to "squeeze" over. That said the number scooters and trikes driving around

at night with no headlights or taillights is unbelievable. A recipe for disaster, and this is yet

another example. RIP

In Pattaya I always make sure I am home with my bike before sunset?? Seems when the sun goes down speeding and risk taking climbs dramatically. Can understand holidaymaker on hired bikes maybe have drink in them. But Thais seem to change for some inexplicable reason??

I will never understand the Thai mind. <deleted> is so difficult about turning on your lights, and why would you not do it and so put your life in danger? Can people really be that stupid?

Well , if their light is not working and they cant afford to fix it or there will be no noodle soup tonight. What can you do ?

The motor bike driver I am 99% sure did not have his headlight on.

Maybe broken or he didn't think he needed it......whatever.

If it wasn't broken before, it most certainly was after the crash.

How does one prove, in court, that it wasn't turned on when it got destroyed in the crash?

There may be is a way. Assuming that the headlamp bulb is NOT still intact you just examine the filament, if you can find it. If the bulb was illuminated when the crash happened and the glass broke then the filament will have vaporised. If on the other hand, the bulb was not illuminated, the filament will likely have just broken and bits of it will still be there, or it might even be intact. However, if the whole bulb is still intact, i.e glass not broken, then it is not possible to differentiate between the two scenarios.

I live 1km from the lake and really enjoy the area.. I am often riding my bike or doing a 7-11 run at night and as everyone as stated there are a lot of scooters with no headlights and even more with no taillights.. And those run down scooters with the side carts do block the road during the day and night but they are not going to be outlawed anytime soon so best to relax and wait until it is very safe to pass..I also drive a pickup truck that I drive with extreme caution and very defensively. I do not want to get in any accident so I always expect that there might be a scooter with no lights and would have passed more slowly... This guy I suspect came up on the cart and with hardly any traffic around the lake at 1am just whipped around it at speed leaving no chance for ether vehicle to make an evasive move... Reckless driving is the norm in this country and I don't see this changing any time soon ether... RIP to the decease..
