BANGKOK: -- The Department of Special Investigation has found out that the Dhammakaya temple has received 1,216 million baht in donations through its affiliates which are double of the amount earlier discovered.

Pol Lt-Col Somboon Sarasit, commander of the office of the special crime cases of the DSI, disclosed Tuesday that investigation of the money trail of Wat Dhammakaya showed the temple had received 10 cheques worth 642 million baht; Phra Thepyarn Mahamunee received 10 cheques worth 431 million baht and Rattana-ubasikachan Khon Nokyoong foundation received five cheques worth 143 million totaling 23 cheques worth 1,216 million baht compared to earlier figure of 600 million baht.

Pol Lt-Col Somboon said that inspection of the books of Klong Chan Credit Union cooperative during 2008-2012 showed the cooperative had been running at a loss all along but it managed to pay 10 percent dividends to its members. This, he added, has misled members to believe that the cooperative was financially stable.

DSI chief Mrs Suwana Suwanchutha, meanwhile, said DSI officials on Tuesday raided seven houses of officials and former officials of Klong Chan Credit Union cooperative in Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Nonthaburi in search of evidences.

Three land title deeds and copies of bank cheques payble to Phra Ratpavanavisut, Wat Dhammakaya and Rattana Khiri foundation were among the evidences found in the house searches. Mrs Suwana said the DSI would lodge complaints with Thung Song Hong police against three abbots in Chiang Mai for their failures to meet DSI officials as summonsed.

Gotta love the crass commercialization of all Thai Theravada® Buddhism.

So embarrassing.

It's like with all religions, there are some bad eggs and some religions are (I'm sad to say) mostly bad eggs!

Look at the Catholic church that have had so many child molesters and has been protecting them.

The Muslims in IS that can't even read and comprehend what the Koran says but still, they are Muslims.

Scientologists, a religion that even infiltrated US government organizations to get them to keep out of their business.

And so on.

Back to the Thai Theravada Buddhism, there are some REALLY big temple that get a LOT of money but there are also small temples where the monks live without even basic things like electricity and running water. Then we have the rest in between like the small temple here in the village. There is 3 monks and still the village people has donated over 1,000,000 during the last year. The money has gone to build a bell tower, new toilets and renovate the houses for the monks (the abbot even payed from his own pocket to have an AC installed in his house). Next year the village want to raise 2-3 million so that they can build an Ubosot อุโบสถ (or bot, which many Thais refer to basically being the church of the temple) in the temple.

"1,216 million baht." Isn't that 1 billion, 216 million? Just saying. In the temple where I was living in Khok Samrong, Lopburi, we built a new gathering hall, cost 2 million baht, took 3 years to gather the money and build. The kind of money that Wat Dammakaya brings in is just unbelievable. Has to be some monkey business going on. coffee1.gif
