Democrats want 'Shin murder' investigated

Democrat Party member Sirichoke Sopha yesterday submitted a letter to the Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM) asking it to speed up an investigation into the murder of a shipping agent two years ago.

Kornthep Wiriya, a key prosecution witness in the Shin Satellite tax-evasion case, was gunned down in Chiang Rai.

Shin Satellite and sister company CS Communications were accused of evading Bt100 million in tax. Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose family owned a major stake in Shin Satellite, has previously denied any involvement in the murder.

Sirichoke submitted a videotape of testimony by Kornthep to the National Police Commissioner, General Kowit Wattana, who is also part of the CDRM.

He said he would submit a copy of a cheque for Bt4.53 million to the Office of the Auditor-General today as evidence of tax evasion.

Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunan. Nice idea that, she did certainly come across as honest.

Noose seems to be tightening. Thaksin really in the shit and only the idiot Condoleza Rice batting for him these days. Great show of ignorance again by the White House.

Interesting times ahead and I think the next government will have to be straight(er) as they will have the coup in recent memory to focus the mind.

It will be interesting to see if any of these investigations lead to anything. There is a lot of investigating that needs to be done.

As for the next gov't learning from the coup--it's doubtful. They have had a lot of coups and a lot of gov'ts that didn't learn from them. They need a constitution that is tighter and checks and balances that aren't subject to manipulation or political interference.

I mentioned this case of 'shipping moo' as he was known, a few months ago on this forum. After his death some TRT said maybe he was a womaniser, if I remember rightly he was near timewise to testifying.

It was a big case amongst the politically interested at the time but of course there was no progress.

By the way why has Ja Yak gone so quiet about the 'car bomb?'

Police forms investigative panel to probe major assassination cases

The National Police Chief appointed a fact-finding panel to look into the assassination of Kornthep Wiriya, aka "Shipping Moo", and the shooting of a lecturer of Stamford University in Hua Hin. Three culprits are reportedly in police custody.

Police Commissioner-General Police General Phatcharavat Wongsuwan assigned his deputies, Police General Thanee Somboonsab and Police Lt.-General Atsawin Kwanmueang, to head the investigative panel responsible for the two cases.

These serious cases include the murder of Kornthep Wiriya, also known as "Shipping Moo," a key witness in a tax evasion case of Shin Satellite Company, and the shooting of the former vice-rector of Stamford University in Hua Hin, Mr Donald Whiting, and his wife.

The investigative officers reported the three culprits of the vice-rector case had been arrested in Chumphon and Pathum Thani provinces. They were later identified as Yutthana Areesawat, a former security guard, Yutthana's older brother, Samart Areesawat, and Ekanan Jitmahima. The three confessed that they shot Mr Whiting as he had a conflict with Mr Yutthana.

What are the links between Whiting,Wiriya and Shin Corp ? Anyone willing to shed some light?

Perhaps there is something in the additional info on Whiting in the other thread bump on these case reopenings:

Was it only two years ago? I thought thought Thaksin was still in power at the time?

In 2004, he was.

Going further back into the archives, some specifics of his background...

'Shipping Moo' visits NCCC

A shipping official yesterday testified as a witness for the prosecution before the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) in a malfeasance case against Deputy Finance Minister Suchart Jaovisidha.

Kornthep Wiriya - also known as Shipping Moo - yesterday spent seven hours providing testimony to the NCCC over alleged corruption related to the import of satellite equipment by Shin Satellite Co and CS Communication Co.

The family of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra owns both companies.

The opposition has accused Suchart of failing to take action over the alleged corruption committed by the two companies.

Kornthep was accompanied by Democrat MP Sirichok Sopa (Songkhla), who said Kornthep had been cooperative, but was concerned about his safety.

Following his appearance before the NCCC, Kornthep has tried to avoid being photographed, covering his head with a jacket when confronted by reporters.

Nevertheless, Kornthep denied being afraid when asked about acts of intimidation.

He insisted that he had simply told the truth and had not wanted to slander anybody.

The trying-to-maintain-incognito aspect was very noticeable when trying to find a photo of him. I found only one... and put it in yesterday's post.

The Shin mureder is interesting. this will be the first time there may be politcal will to allow an investigetion to run its course. There could well be evidence in this case as there has not been the will to look into it yet. However, with a new government active and them winning by-elections there may be the confidence for investigators to actually look into things.

Time will tell.

One thing I would guess is that the "womanising" remark by the TRTer was a red herring :o

It's easy to understand Sirichok's personal involvement as he was with the prosecution witness since 4 years previously... when he was still alive.

Nevertheless, Kornthep denied being afraid when asked about acts of intimidation.

He insisted that he had simply told the truth

A shame that his naivety may have very well cost him his life. "Simply telling the truth" can be a death sentence when some members of society are involved.

Didn't they teach you in school? "Telling the truth will get you killed, Voting for the right party will get you money".

At least the Democrat MP Sirichok Sopa (Songkhla) don't have to worry about Kornthep safety anymore; he is now dead as a log.

Puea Thai Party refuses to be nicknamed “Shinawatra Party”

A Puea Thai Party Spokesman opposes the nickname “Shinawatra Party” labeled on his party while clarifying that some Puea Thai Party MP's traveling to meet former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is not an assignment from the Party.

Puea Thai Party Spokesperson Prompong Nopparit rejected his Party being deemed as “Shinawatra Party”, explaining that it is being administered by a rightful leader and executives. In terms of any member from the Shinawatra family being interested in entering politics, he affirmed that it would be a matter of personal right to do so and that the Puea Thai Party would be willing to welcome the individual as its core leader.

Prompong stated that the Party had received a report from Chiang Rai MP La-ongrat Tiyapairat that a police unit led by Metropolitan Police Chief Police Lieutenant-General Assawin Kwanmuang was conducting an inspection in the province for the Shipping Moo case, which involves the murder of Mr. Kornthep Viriya, a major witness in the ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra’s tax evasion case.

Thus, the Puea Thai Party Spokesman suggested the police not to become a political tool while warning them that the case would bring much controversy to the nation.

Meanwhile, in regards to some Puea Thai Party MPs traveling to meet Thaksin, a core leader of the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) Nattawut Saikua stated that it was not a part of the Puea Thai Party’s policy, but rather merely a personal decision to do so.

The Red Shirt "intel unit" is making a lot of mistakes lately with incorrect information...

Meanwhile, 20 red-shirt supporters gathered at the residence of former House Speaker and banned politician from now-dissolved People Power Party Yongyuth Tiyapairat in Mae Chan District of Chiang Rai province.

They said they want to prevent the Crime Suppression Police from searching Yongyuth's home for evidence and to protect justice.

Later, the Chiang Rai Court said there is no search warrant or any plan to search Yongyuth's residence as claimed by the red-shirt members.

Cant mess with Yuth in Chiang Rai. That is right dangerous and even the authorities better learn the lesson other mere mortals have.

Edited to add: seriously with rumours of a divide between Yuth and the northern shin clan leadership, he may be feeling isolated. What happens here is worth following.

I wonder if these justice-supporters from the 'Shinawatra Party' sense the irony, in their attempt to impede a police investigation into corruption, which attempts to match that of their escaped & on-the-run convicted-criminal hero, who also still wishes to use the Thai courts to gag his critics ?

Have some of them been travelling, to Dubai or Hong Kong or wherever, to take lessons from 'the master' ? :o

Well he seems an ideal choice to head this up--- the National Police Chief who's reinstatement was confirmed by the new government despite findings by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that he (Pol Gen Patcharawat Wongsuwan) ----along with the Former PM, 31 of his former cabinet members and 23 police officers ------should be charged with murder over the bloody clash with protesters at Government House which left two dead and hundreds injured.

Moved from wrong thread:

yongyuth.jpg

Yongyuth swears he is innocent

Former House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat yesterday swore he had nothing to do with the murder of a key witness in the Shin Corp tax-evasion case and showed images captured by a close-circuit camera depicting a group of men raiding and destroying his four-storey house in Bangkok after the 2006 coup.

Yongyuth organised the press conference yesterday to counter the Justice Ministry's move to have the Department of Special Investigation look into the murder of Kornthep Wiriya, or "Shipping Moo" as he was known, who was shot dead on March 24, 2003. Politicians in the Thaksin Shinawatra's government linked the death with drug trade.

Yongyuth also said that he had given a foreign friend a copy of the CD, so it could be used as evidence in case he was killed.

He only played some parts of the film yesterday, showing his house being raided and destroyed by a group of men in black on September 20, 2006. He refused to turn on the sound, claiming that the voices would reveal who was behind it and cause further divisions in the country.

When playing the scene of a man removing his hood to talk on the phone, Yongyuth said this man was known in the military circles and if he turned on the sound, the reporters would know who he was talking to on the phone.

He said he had to produce this evidence because he was told that a government politician had linked him with the murder of Shipping Moo in Chiang Rai's Mae Chan District.

Yongyuth revealed that after the coup, a top police officer had gone to the Mae Chan district police station and told a senior officer that if he could frame Yongyuth, he would be promoted. However, he said, the officer refused and was transferred to the South. He police officer has only just been reinstated in his old post in Chiang Rai.

"Politicians ordered my arrest. I have lots of friends in the police force, so I want to warn them that such cases have a 20-year statute of limitations. If you produce false evidence to protect politicians, you will be held responsible. Politics is never certain. Those who instructed you will also die one day," he said.

Yongyuth said he was trying to clear his name in nine cases, including the one related to him getting red-carded, the fabrication of document to apply as People Power Party and the shares transfer case.

He said he was forced to produce this CD because his back was against the wall.

"Do not corner me like this. I am suffering from the way the military treated me. I was not angry when they detained me without any charges. Then they raided and destroyed my house. What comes next?" he asked.

When asked why he had not taken his case to the courts, Yongyuth said he did not know who he could depend on.

He said he could seek justice through international agencies if he wanted, though he would have to die before he could reveal the voice of the man in the CD.
