WHO's Thailand chief sued in Nonthaburi provincial court by former maid

BANGKOK: -- The Nonthaburi provincial court has accepted a criminal lawsuit filed against World Health Organisation’s chief in Thailand by his former maid who accused him of abuses, illegal detention, assault, human trafficking and enslavement.

The Ethiopean maid, 26-year old Ms Emabet Mamo Beezabe, sought help from the Law Council of Thailand which arranged for a lawyer to initiate the lawsuit against her former employer, Mr Yonas Tegegn, also an Ethiopean, WHO chief in Thailand.

She said that she was asked by Mr Tegegn to come to Thailand to work as a maid for the WHO chief and his wife at their house. However, she claimed that during her one year and eight months working for the couple, she was beaten up several times by her employers, forced to work almost 24 hours a day, insulted, was given only plain rice to eat and was not paid.

She said she earlier lodged a complaint with the Pakkred police but without any action taken against her employers and, therefore, resorted to help from the Law Council of Thailand.

She seems very aware of her rights for an Ethiopian maid, somebody "prompting" her do you think?

She sought legal advice. Maybe she listened.

In think most people know right from wrong.

Actually read the article and you won't have to ask.

HaHa... in Ethiopia most people Don't know right from left......blink.png

This happens all the time all over the world...maids working in foreign countries are especially vulnerable and easily exploited.

sue this cheap skate he gets well paid what a <deleted>#$k wit and his wife , a doctor with no compassion working for WHO bye bye.

Sounds like another case of Human Trafficking.

Maybe the Who chief should be sleeping with that bank manager that owned the pig farm.

Don't punish him too hard, last thing we need is another desperate "refugee" waiting at Calais for entry to the promised land.

After all that abuse I would surely hope so.

This is a story reported quite some time ago but I guess when first reported was not dealt with

properly. I hope now it is.

Wrong, very wrong. Have you ever been there?

who needs ethiopian maid when you can get a cambodian one for less than 100 baht per day ?

who needs ethiopian maid when you can get a cambodian one for less than 100 baht per day ?

Or a Thai citizen.

To me, in the cold light of the current Immigration department corruption scandal and crackdown after the bombings, it screams about how "flexible" the Thailand Immigration department can be when they want to or they are incentivized.

What skills does an Ethiopian maid have that a Thai does not? How do they get the work permit for a maid?

Economics has nowt to do with it. Because she was from his home country he was able to exert more control over her as well as being able to communicate with her in Amharic. I doubt he has any Khmer skills.
