NCPO requests more time to probe twin bombings

BANGKOK, 10 September 2015 (NNT) – According to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), more time is required to investigate the two explosions in Bangkok even though much progress has been made.

In a televised announcement, NCPO Spokesperson Col Winthai Suvaree stated that much crucial information has been uncovered in the case related to the deadly bombing at Ratchaprasong intersection and another failed attack at Sathorn Pier. However, in order to bring more clarity, he asked the public to be patient and allow more time for the authorities to work on the case.

In terms of tourists’ protection, Col Winthai said security officers have been stationed at all prime locations in a bid to prevent any untoward incidents from happening. Operators of retail stores and shopping malls were also encouraged to stringently maintain their security system.

Should there be a need for advice or support in conducting security operations within their premises, the NCPO Spokesman invited the operators to contact the military, police or any related agencies.

got to admit, they were not fast of the mark but have done some good work so far to get what they have, kind of makes it hard to knock the usual incompetence if the police. So far they are doing alright compared to their usual results, more time is appropriate in this case

I'm not sure they've done anything more than find the remnants of a bomb-making operation. The fact is that ISIL has been trafficking Uighur militants through Thailand's porous borders for at least the past year. Nothing would have been done about it, except that when Prayuth deported the 100+ Uighurs back to China, instead of sending them onto their ultimate destination of Turkey, the remaining Uighurs and ISIL organized a terror scheme.

Most of what has transpired in the investigation fell into the lap of RTP, when the Nom Chok apartment owner reported that some Turkish types had rented a set of 4 rooms in her apartment building (she was far more deserving of the reward money than any RTP officer). By the time RTP figured out what had happened and run all the leads they found from the rented rooms, most of the operatives were long gone. For years, Somyot did nothing about immigration department corruption which was the single greatest breach of security that led to the bombing. Immigration officers on the Cambodian border were paid about 18,000 baht to allow Uighurs entry into Thailand without passports. Once in Thailand, there was a large supply of fake Turkish passports distributed by ISIL which could be used to send the militants on to Turkey so that they could join ISIL in Syria.

I don't think anyone is rushing them to bring the bomber to justice anymore. The international community knows what happened, and the Thai government will continue to deny that this was a terrorist attack and that ISIL was trafficking militants through Thailand. After all, the government is more interested in tourism and their TIP report Tier 3 rating, than the security and safety of the public.
