Married in Europe but not in Thailand - home country wont accept divorce

Featured Replies

Hi,

i ran into a bit of a problem

Im married in Scandinavia with a Thai. Marriage never registered in Thailand

We left scandinavia a few years ago and both are living in Thailand.

We tried to get a divorce back home, but was denied due to the fact, that we where no longer resident of my home country

Both want a divorce, we agreed about the terms and are in good standing. Back home, we have a court stamped prenub. We have kids together and ex/wife never tried to rip me off, both me and wife, just want the divorce as quickly and easy as possible.

Problem/Question

I cant file for divorce here in Thailand, since my marriage are not registered. So what are my options?

Should i register marriage and then right after file for divorce?

Is that normal that a marriage in one country can be cancelled in another country?

What about assets in this case, Back home there will be no court intervention since we agree about all terms and there is a prenub. Will that be same here?

As for assets, nothing of significant value in Thailand, but assets back home and in other countries of significant value. Assets accumulated while beeing married are significant and i would like to protect these (wife understand this and agreed to this before getting married and signed prenub back home)

I will get an lawyer in any case, but to be prepared a bit, i would like if someone could help me understand my options a bit before i do something i will regret later and loose a lot of assets.

Thank you so much for any advice.

Don't get divorced in Thailand is all I can recommend.

As much as Thai's love money and assets, they would love getting their hands on yours

Have you asked at your embassy?
