Aircon massive energy consumption? Any alternative?

The compressor will not run all the time, once the room cools, the inside unit fan (on auto) will switch to a lower speed, and if the room reaches the set-point temperature, the compressor will be turned off (or slowed for invertor units).

Don't set the temperature too low (perhaps 24-25 DegC), only use it when you need it, and keep the fan on Auto.

Your average consumption should be less than you predict. Seal doors and windows to keep the cool air in.

As to the rating, yes 18 KBTU sounds high for a 26 sqm room, but not by much. That is what I have in my bedroom.

Those aircon boxes in Homepro do not cool the room much, they use water to generate a cool draught. If your bedroom is at 34 DegC when you turn in, you will be glad of the 18,000 BTU rating. A fan can be a good substitute on cooler nights.

Evaporative coolers such as sold in Homepro will only work if you have an ambient humidity below 50%. If the humidity is 80 - 90%, they are virtually useless because no cooling effect is produced - just air movement, which you can get with a fan anyway.

Put ice in the reservoir and place it right in front of your chair. Even with high humidity, it's better than a fan. thumbsup.gif But agreed. The rest of the room will feel like a sauna after pouring water on the rocks. Lol

Move to Thailand and cannot afford aircon. I have no idea how people can survive so poor.

You acclimatize. Really. I've spent more time in Thailand without A/C then with. And considering I was raised in the 1950s, I've lived plenty of places where we had limited or no A/C post WWII. You acclimatize. Well, until you get older, and then it becomes tougher.

10 bht a unit is highway robbery. I am paying 7 and that is more than twice the government rate. Your landlord is ripping you off. In this hot humid climate 18000btu for 25 to 30 sqm room is ok. The best type of unit to get is an inverter type. Although more expensive, maybe 30,000bht for a 18,000 btu unit it will cost you about one third of your current unit to run.

I understand that the commercial electric rate is 7 Bt per unit, I don't know if that applies to rented Condos.

10 Bt per unit is really taking the P!ss.

You might consider a solar powered unit.... While doing some research for a new product I'm considering bringing to the market in Thailand (Air Conditioner Clothes Dryer) I ran across these solar powered units that seem to be energy self sufficient. The one I looked at was 12,000 BTU but I have an apartment that's larger than yours and I purchased a 12,000 BTU unit (not solar) and keep it set on 27 C (24-7) and my electric is about 1800-2000 per month 4 BAHT K. Of course the solar units are a little more expensive than traditional units, however reducing or eliminating your electric bill (A/C use) while contributing to "green" energy usage would seem to be worth paying a little extra up front. I would think you would achieve ROI in 12-18 months.

There are many companies who produce these units, the link below is just the one I happened to land on..

Green? Really. You any idea the amount of pollution created making solar cells. When you add the manufacturing cost, and account for environmental damage due to pollution, only a Westerner would pat them on the back and congratulates themselves for 'Going Green', while being completely ignorant of the immense ecological damaging and collateral costs (of eventually having to clean up the pollution) occurring around the manufacturing sites and mining operations.

"But they're just Chinese peasants being poisoned and only China is being turned into a toxic cesspit."

Liberal, green, and ignorant (at best) or complicit (at worst). That's like thinking all the 'Green' nuclear energy is only adversely effecting the area adjacent to Fukishima: Ignorance or complicity. That begs the question. You live on the US Pacific Coast? Green? Actually more like nuclear ionized ' Blue' in the US West Coast future.

The last reason I'd use solar cell is because they are 'Green'; they are not. But they have their uses.

Just bought ten more Superhamsters for my self made wheel. Works great...

Use pet rats, they are bigger and faster, and still beautiful little animals.

More plentiful in Thailand then hamsters.

There are many solar thermal boosted units that don't use photovoltaic solar cells, which I believe is where your concerns lay. There are some very good units around that will perform the same function as an inverter unit but use around 70% of the electrical power.

Take a look here:

Turn it off...buy a couple of fans....

Wants a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget. Buy fans. My current electric bill is around 625 bahts this month. Quit complaining.

hglenn2000, I rent a condo with reasonable rent in a location ideal for me.

Yes, the electricity rate is high, but I have lived here 10 years, have acclimatized, and actually find aircon both uncomfortable and cold.

If the rent were to increase and the electricity rate be reduced, I would consider moving.

I knew the situation about the higher tariff when I moved in, just as anyone should who lives here. It is my choice how much electric I consume, so why should I pay higher rent to subsidize everyone else's higher consumption of electricity ?

I can tell you it doesn't I have rented out my apartment in the past and my rate didn't go up from the electric company.... And I happen to know owners of two different apartment building and they both pay 4-5 per K unit

I bougth the last Daikin Inverter 24'000 BTU so nice , very silent , I do not ear the compressor when i seat on the balcony , the compressor never stop but modulate , devided my electric bill by 2 , A/C + hot water Kitchen and Shower 1400 THB/Mth before double.

But it comes at a price instalation 45'000 THB
