The PM Prayuth Chan o cha did as he was expected to do.

Attend the UN General assembly, speak briefly at the Assembly, mingle with President Obama and President Xi Jinping as he did both at the UN and at a couple of reception parties.

I am sure the world powers and the UN General Assembly would certainly rather it be him attending than any previous controversial PM.

What did some on here expect him to do .... ?? cartwheels in the foyer !! whistling.gif

"I am sure the world powers and the UN General Assembly would certainly rather it be him attending than any previous controversial PM. "

I'm pretty sure that is BS. You see, in some parts of the world they actually care if a leader is elected or....well, "self elected".

so you would sooner go back to the dismal days of protests every day blocking roads & buildings, explosions, security non-existant , fighting tit for tat between yellow and red shirts.

You didn't mind that ???

huh !!

I'm glad the military are in charge, at least there is some form of decent governance in place.

Most Thais are happy with things now as opposed to the previous controversial PM... which everyone knows was a sham.

To those foreigner who whinge and complain and the cry babies .....

they can always go back home ! whistling.gif

but you have your thoughts and opinion and i respect that.

Couple of quick questions:

1. How do you know most Thais are happy?

2. How would going home make one less happy about the current political state of affairs in Thailand? What would it resolve?

Wow, what an intelligent statement, never heard that before! I guess you were unhappy living here (assuming you do) under the different elected governments and complained about it. So why didn't you go home?

He may have tried just when the Yellow Shirts occupied the aerodrome.

sorry, am i missing something here ?

Would you prefer Thailand as it was before Gen Prayuth came to power ???????????????

I would like Thailand to be allowed to evolve as a democracy without interference from the military and their supporter, simple as that. So to answer your question; yes, you're missing something (or rather a whole lot).

Couple of quick questions:

1. How do you know most Thais are happy?

2. How would going home make one less happy about the current political state of affairs in Thailand? What would it resolve?

1. This was the result of a poll done recently :

The opinion poll was conducted by Rajabhat University of Suan Dusit campus during September from 1,712 people throughout the country.

81.71 percent of the people are happy with the appointment of General Prayuth Chan-ocha as the prime minister

The poll shows the following results:

84.11 percent feel that the NCPO can control the situation after three months in the office; 76.93 percent admit that the junta is capable of solving several immediate problems and 72.14 percent believe that the junta will be able to fulfil its roadmap.

52.17 percent admit that the outstanding points of the NCPO are its decisiveness and speed in addressing problems; 26.25 percent identify restoration of happiness as the outstanding feature of the junta.

2. If one is dissatisfied with the way a country is being governed or they constantly gripe and moan about the government and the way the country is being run then they could consider going back home as maybe they will be happy then.

Exactly.

Did he do any worthwhile networking to make contacts and promote Thailand in any way, does he have the confidence to do so?

Did any one worthwhile really want to talk with him?

Was his best achievement meeting a few other dismal leaders of crummy backwaters with oppressed populations.

Too often I read comments attributed to Thai senior officials that the world does not understand Thailand, if true then sadly they are missing out there is a world of benefits out there if they would like to understand and engage the rest of the world. BTW China is not the rest of the world.

At the end of the day Military rulers are of little benefit to their countries and history shows they look after themselves, not their people.

I am happy with Thailand. I was happy in Thailand before when the last controversial PM was in place, but certainly no one likes shootings, streets blocked every day and no law and order ....... but that's right !!! the last controversial PM couldn't control that so someone had to step in.

I am happy as most thais ( as i pointed out ) with the current government.

Thanks for the discussion guys but I gotta run ...... smile.png

"I am happy as most thais ( as i pointed out ) with the current government."

Yes, that you pointed out but failed spectacularly to answer why it is that the junta don't organize elections so that their rule can be actually mandated by the people if most Thais are happy with them.

How does that work? I don't like Angela Merkel in Germany, but I have never set foot in the country. How would my leaving Thailand and relocating to the UK make me any happier about it?

Similarly in Thailand: Why would I dislike the junta less if I were in England? In fact I was last week and no, I still wasn't any happier about the state of politics. Now what?

And here is photographic record of Prayut's "meeting" with Obama - Obama is in the front row, whilst Prayut is in the very back row, far left.

And Prayut is not greeting Obama with a friendly wave - he was waving to the UN photographer.

I don't think Obama knew that Prayut was there.

Next year, when the One Internet Gateway is imposed, we might not be able to search for such sensitive/embarrassing evidence of a white lie.

Is that Mr. T (squarehead) waving in the lower right front of the photo

So where is the picture of Prayut and Obama shaking hands? Surely if he had met the US president he would have covered that in the Thai press at the time as he did with Banki Moon.

I suspect BS all the way,, the only thing the President of the US would say to Prayut is "when is power being returned to a democratically elected government?"

He has no international influence, he is just a soldier who has appointed himself as PM.

Thailand is seen as a holiday destination currently under military rule, thats it,,

As for the President being impressed with his plans,, please,,, give me a break.

Nice picture

Why didn't he meet with members of the European Union who are looking at slamming Thailand with sanctions over the fishing slavers ?

Maybe too much to do and too little time?

Seems the EU was more interested in keeping an eye on the Obama/Putin (no) handshake, the Obama/Castro meeting and a few other issues of concern. Just a matter of priority. PM Prayut was already lucky Mr. Ban had time for him which Mr. Ban doesn't have for just everybody.

Nice quote my friend Rubi, except for the last sentence.<deleted>

Have a nice day and keep up the good writing, it sure does make me chuckle at times

A nice pic of the PM at the UN, appears there was a massive interest in what he had to say, errrrrrrr.......

Ouch, that must have been a bummer, speaking to all those empty chairs, as he used to commanding the attention of the entire Kingdom whenever he opens his mouth.

You reckon? Round these parts he is known as 'Pray-' because that is how long it takes to turn off the TV...

If we are going to be fair about it he has made the country less aggressive. Sure there are things he hasnt done but show me one head of state that solves all the problems in the time we are discussing in Thailand? None have and everyone here knows it. If you think democracy is going to be as easy as turning on a light then you are very naive. It will take a long time before democracy as is being banded around on this site has a chance. In many ways I think that is good as Thailand has been too divided for as long as I can remember.

Before anyone says anything, yes mistakes are bound to happen it is natural. The one big mistake that I feel is being made is not using overseas knowledge to solve problems. This is not to say you blindly take advice and act on it, you don't. You take the good bits that can be incorporated here in Thailand and leave the rest out of it.

When I first came to Thailand over 30 years ago there were coup's every nine months. Things have improved dramatically but a lot of change is still required. For example enforcing the law irrespective of rank in society, being fair to everyone across the board irrespective of nationality to name just two things. These should be relatively easy to fix but have yet to be done.

And Cameron is out on the right towards the back. Modi, the mate of the POTUS is at the back. So?

Are you really trying to suggest Obama organized where people should stand or something?

Suggesting Obama didn't know who was there or not is insulting - to Obama. He's probably a bit better informed than you,

You have learned nothing in 30 years in the LOS if you're ok with the current administration. The head of it asks for more time each Friday -- and gives it to himself, natch.

If he ever decided to let go of the reigns of power, he could become manager of Liverpool. Manage to not lose at home to a third rate Swiss team, and call it success.
