BANGKOK: -- The Royal Thai Air Force today issued an announcement allowing motorists to use road inside its airbase at Don Muang as a shortcut between Phahon Yothin and Vibhavadi Rangsit to ease the current traffic congestion resulted from the Green Line electric rail route construction.

Entry will be allowed only during rush hours from 6.00-9.00 am in the morning, and 4.00-7.00 pm in the evening.

The airbase and headquarters area is normally a restricted area and private vehicles are not allowed to enter if they have no pass cards issued by the Air Force.

But as traffic problem has worsened after the Laksi elevated bridge is being torn down to pave the way for the construction of the extension of the Green Line route, the Air Force commander-in-chief ACM Tritos Sonjaeng agreed to allow private cars to use its area as a short cut.

However only private cars are allowed while buses and trucks are still banned because the shortcut route inside is a two-way traffic road.

Motorists are also advised to comply strictly with traffic signs.

According to Bangkok Post, The Phahon Yothin Road was partly closed in the mid section mid last month to allow construction of a 19-kilometre-long extension of the Green Line from Mor Chit area of Bangkok northwards to Khu Khot sub-district of Pathum Thani province.

Construction is expected to last three years.
