PRIVY COUNCIL TRIBUTE

Prem likens 'selfless' Surayud to Churchill

Prime minister was willing to step in and take up the running of the country at a 'critical moment in its history'

Privy Council Presi-dent Prem Tinsula-nonda yesterday likened Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont to Britain's wartime premier and statesman Winston Churchill for selflessly taking up the leadership challenge under trying times.

"Churchill spoke about sacrifice that showed that he had to sacrifice for the country. Surayud is like Churchill in becoming the prime minister without any design but doing it for the country," Prem said.

Political leadership should be about suppressing self-interest rather than amassing power to satisfy greed and temptation, said the chief adviser to His Majesty the King, drawing on the experience of Churchill.

"Churchill is the embodiment of sacrifice as he was tasked to lead England during World War II," Prem said.

Dire circumstances saw Churchill taking up the prime minister's mantle, while Surayud was appointed premier amid the despair of social division.

"I believe both Churchill and Surayud did not expect to assume power but were willing to serve the motherland," he said.

World War II broke out because no more than 10 people were obsessed with power and tried to conquer the world, he said, quoting Churchill.

While here, turmoil erupted because of runaway power.

He was speaking on the topic of political development and reconciliation at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Lat Krabang.

Prem touched on the characteristics of a national leader, saying he must maintain high morals, understand public problems and know how to solve them, persevere with an athlete's spirit and not allow himself to succumb to power and avarice.

"Leaders must not be obsessed with power and cling to it. They must know the word 'enough' and appreciate the King's sufficiency economy philosophy. All these qualities of good leaders will unify the nation."

He reiterated he was confident Phra Siam Thewathirat, the Guardian Spirit, was watching over the country.

"Phra Siam Thewathirat will curse bad people to their end and to meet grievous suffering for the rest of their lives," he said.

Accompanied by Surayud, he officiated at the opening of an exhibition to honour His Majesty before delivering his speech to 1,000 students and faculty.

He suggested a 10-point code to promote social harmony and national unity.

Key elements include putting the public before personal interests, being honest, upholding the law and justice, ensuring transparency, not equating wealth with goodness, being ready to admit mistakes, striving for national security and repaying the motherland.

Very highly regarded. Cleaner than clean as well.

Well, other than the Black May incident, you mean, where he was in Command of the Special Warfare Command (with now Gen. Sonthi as one of his officers), and where his troops were involved in shooting demonstrators. The investigation report into this incident is still kept secret, not open to the public, and we, the normal human beings, are only left with his word that he did not issue the order to shoot to the troops he commanded.

Shouldn't his name be cleared by opening that report to the public, as there will always be some lingering doubt?

Prem's speach is again the usual hyperbole, comparing Surayud with Churchill. Bit of a different situation - the world facing WW2, and a Thailand increasingly slipping into banana republic status?

Where are now the attacks against Prem regarding superstition, by the way? When Thaksin was reported to consult astrologers i remember endless posts attacking him on this subject, but Prem directly cursing people with some diety should require at least as much sarcasm, if not more.

Appears to be a tad bit selectively applied hate here... :o

The colonel once again showing his ignorance regarding Thailand. พระสยามเทวธิราช Pra Siam Thewathirat is considered by Thais to be the guardian spirit of Thailand, encompassing all the virtues and good characteristics of past leaders and kings, in a spiritual form, to protect the land from evil.

It's a collective belief, a blueprint, in the virtues of what today would be called a moral and decent Prime Minister, in the past, a King.

Thaksin,on the other hand, was consulting several astrologers to be able to personally ward off any 'powers' that could affect him. He wasn't looking for the 'right' way to live in a moral sense, just for protection.

Give the Colonel one thing, he would make a good politician!!. He takes a statement, completely changes it, puts his own spin on it and then rambles on, normally with numerous spelling mistakes, and concludes with a complete fabrication of reality. Like I have said before, I think he is a wind up merchant :o

Well, if you believe that your guardian spirit helps you ruling the country, then go ahead. Superstition nonetheless.

I will hope for sound economical and social policies instead.
