GENEVA: -- It has now been a week since any new cases of Ebola were declared in the three West African countries at the centre of a recent epidemic.

The World Health Organisation says more than 11,000 people have died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the outbreak was officially recognised in March 2014.

Liberia was declared free of the disease on September 3rd. Guinea’s most recent cases were recorded on September 27th. Sierra Leone released its last patient on September 28th and must wait 42 days before being declared Ebola-free.

The recent outbreak has been the worst since Ebola was identified in 1976.

Almost 29,000 people have been infected since the first cases were registered in December 2013.
