Upcountry all the internet cafes use fake Microsoft products and I've noticed now I can't print from the Word documents, I see in Thai at the top of the page it says I can't and they're right. Is there a way round this? Could I copy and paste the document into another format so I can print it?

Thanking any helpful replies in advance.

If only it was that easy MJCM, there's a red bar at the top of the page saying printing has failed for this document, I tried 2 different cafes and asked for the owners' assistance - couldn't print.

Are you talking about something you have just created on there computer or a document you have had? Thinking perhaps there word copy does not have the fonts you require if a document made elsewhere. Have you tried to convert to PDF and print that?

Use a workaround, print your stuff at home to a pdf printer (program) and then take pdf files to the internet cafe's or alternatively invest in a real cheap printer.

Each computer needs the drivers for the printer. Perhaps they haven't done that? Have you tried to print from something else such as notepad? If you copied your Word doc onto a memory stick is there somewhere else that would print it?

It is possible that your thumb drive is not communicating properly with the computer(s) you have been trying to print from.

Also possible (but not probable) that both computers you have tried have their office suites not activated and have passed the trial periods. This would show the red title line and not allow you to print.

Assuming the office suites are activated, and the computer you are using is setup for the printer, what you could try is copying the document you need printing to the desktop and try from there. Better still, open the document and Save As to the desktop. I would only do this if it was very important that you need to print.

If you do try this, remember to delete your file by using shift + delete to bypass the recycle bin when you are finished.

Why do't you send the document to your own e-mail address and try if you can open it? You might have to make the shop's printer to the "default" printer first?

Can't you just ask the guy at the shop to print it from his PC? And as already mentioned, change the format to PDF and give it a try.

Is it possible that he/she doesn't have a computer/printer at home? Just curious, when reading the OP.

The OP doesn't reveal the usage of any other equipment other than the Internet Cafe, but you can't assume there isn't. More likely that the poster just doesn't have a working printer at hand.

As robblok suggested, Microsoft has included 'Print to FILE' drivers since at least Windows 7.

Microsoft XPS Document Writer

Microsoft Print to PDF

Also, depending on the document contents and formatting, you could try opening it up directly in, or using Copy/Paste, with Microsoft WordPad. It can handle simple formatted text and tabbed positioning, but not complex formatted objects like frames or Style Sheets.

You can always send the document to your smart phone, then connect your smart phone to the printer, then print without using the PC.

Or just print at another location.

Easily done with modern phones.

Maybe your word document was created in a different word version than the one on the internet cafe machine. If possible, save your word doc in 2003 format or even RTF format. Those formats should print on almost any machine.

Thank you for all your helpful replies, actually the solution was far easier than I thought. These were documents sent to me in Word form and what I had been doing was downloading them using zip winRAR, then opened as Office, the red bar appeared.

Instead I opened them from my email account as Word Online and printed them out straight from there- forget the zip route!

Thank you again for all the tips,

bannork.

Yes,the new office online apps are great, aren't they? Available in Windows, Android and IOS, all connected to One Drive so that anything that you compose in Word Online is automatically saved to your One Drive. I've been a fan since Word 1.0. Lotus 123 used to be THE spreadsheet program until Microsoft bought Excel and combined it with Microsft Chart. Lotus than just faded away. IMHO, Microsoft is a great company whose major crime is discontinuing Microsoft Money after producing it for nine years. No other money manager comes close to its capabilities even now.
