Visa to Thailand Help

Featured Replies

I am traveling to Thailand on December 20th and will return to USA January 24th 2016. I will be traveling with my mother who was born in Thailand but has a green card to be in the US. Also my 17 year old sister and my 5 year old son. All but myself will be in Thailand the entire trip. I will be leaving the 25th of December to go to Cambodia. I will return to Thailand the 31st of December. With me leaving, I will be in Thailand less then 30 days on each entry. I know if you stay for less then 30 days you do not have to get a visa. So my question is do I have to apply for a visa since I will be leaving and re entering? Will my mother need to do anything and does my son or sister have to get a tourist visa? I've tried calling and emailing the consulate but no reply or answer. I just don't want to apply for tourist visa's if I don't have to.

Does your Mother have a valid Thai passport?

Do you, your sister and your son have valid Thai passports ?

You, your sister and your son are Thai !

As Thais you do not require visas if you have Thai passports.

My friend is also going and he will be going on the Cambodia trip with me. He is American

You are all also Thais and are entitled to Thai passports but never mind.

Make sure your Mothers passport is indeed valid beyond her intended departure date beyond that she needs nothing.

You , your son and sister would all be best advised to obtain tourist visas for the planned trip to avoid any possible problems with the airline.

If intending to rely on visa exempt entries the airline could refuse boarding in the absence of an onward ticket within 30 days of arriving in Thailand.

You could make the trip to Cambodia and receive a thirty day "visa exempt" entry on returning to Thailand.

  • Your mother doesn't need to do anything if she is going to use her Thai passport.

The rest of you could enter with visa exempt entry BUT the airline might not let any of you board that don't have onward flights dated within 30 days.

If you get tourist visas you don't need booked onward flights.

When you do your trip to Cambodia you can get a re-entry permit (1,000 baht) and re-enter using the re-entry permit OR you could re-enter on visa exempt entry.

You could all get Thai ID's and passports whilst in Thailand with the right paperwork. Useful for future visits.

Maybe difficult to secure Thai Passports as everything would have to be verified via the USA Thai Embassy.

The OP does not mention him, his sister or son as having Thai birth certificates issued in the US.

Ok should I apply for a double entry visa since I am leaving Thailand and returning? I also do have all flights booked to Cambodia from Thailand then returning to Thailand from Malaysia. Each of those visits in Thailand are under 30 days. I arrive in Bangkok December 22ND and fly to Cambodia the 25th. Would I need a visa for that time in Thailand being an American citizen. Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to fully understand visa requirements so the trip goes smoothly.

You could make your trip with out a visa, using two visa exempt entries. You should have no problem with the airline since you have flights booked leaving Thailand within 30 days of arrival. You sister and son should get single entry tourist visas.

  • Because you have flights booked out of Thailand you can travel to Thailand using visa exempt entry. You don't need a visa for any of your trips.
  • You could get a single entry tourist visa which gives a 60 day stay and buy a re-entry permit on exit to Cambodia. When you return you can re-enter using that.
  • You could get a double entry tourist visa (if available). A new multi entry tourist visa (METV) is being launched on Nov 13th and it's not yet clear if the double entry tourist visa will still be available after this date.
