BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan said announcement on the crackdown of Mafia-styled gangs will be officially announced either today or tomorrow after the prime minister pledged to root out mafias across the country in six months.

Gen Prawit said today that he was awaiting for the official!appointment of mafia cracking committee from the prime minister which is expected either today and tomorrow.

He said he would head the crack team with the help from the National Council for Peace and Order, the Ministry of Interior, the Royal Thai Police and other relevant government agencies.

He said the crack team would concentrate on the suppression of war weapon and local influential networks, and to bring about safety in life and property of the people.

For mafia-style gangs providing protection for night entertainment venues, he made clear that this would be rooted out.

He said police and military personnel acting as mafias at these venues must not exist otherwise their superiors would be held responsible.

According to this report, they will include the police in this crackdown.

NO WAY.

Translation :

Organised crime networks (all of whom must have deep, deep roots in the police or military) who have not demonstrated sufficient loyalty, ties and cash gifts to the present administration will be sidelined and replaced by those who have.

A few unlucky ones (low to mid-level) will be paraded in front of the media.

Don't try a desperate last-minute appeal as it has already been decided who will be targetted and who will replace them.

This place is so medieval at times.

Once again, if they were even vaguely serious about any of this they would put all their efforts into reforming the police and the courts. That they have done nothing of the sort speaks volumes. Then, when your whole regime is completely illegitimate I guess it's hard to shout loudly about the rule of law.

The time frame of six months is ridiculous. Combined with the always helpful pre-announcement of police strategies and actions, this should assure maximum opportunity for publicity, without imposing a long term commitment or needlessly burdening the court system with defendants.

ok, I thought ir was the police collecting money from the businesses for protection

if I remember correctly, I had a Thai friend with a bar in Pattaya and he was paying some police out of Bankok

for the right to play music

Once again the language of children speaking to younger children: "root out in the next six months" as if that would be at all realistic even if Thai cops were actually clean themselves.

Eradicate all world suffering in 12 months should be their next step.

After decades of military dictatorship, Gens Kriengsak and Prem made a good start at cleaning up the military mafiosi - by no means a 100%, but a good start. Then we had the heyday of the provincial godfathers, who seem to have pretty much disappeared since about 2002. So the big mafia is now back to being no longer dominated by the private sector. If Gen Prawit goes after about half a dozen very well known police and military generals, then he will have earned my respect; if not, not.

Not trying to bash. But Thais have not really learned that "Shock and aw" announcing style yet, have they? Not that something like this should have an official announcement in the first place, but....

Will there be new material added to the official announcement than what has already been supplied in this semi-official announcement?

Seems like all the points have be covered.
