PM issues progress summary on the tackling of IUU fishing

BANGKOK, 27 October 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-o-cha has issued a progress summary on the tackling of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, while affirming the country’s readiness for the latest round of inspections by the European Union.

According to the Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister has placed great importance on solving the country’s long-standing issue of IUU fishing.

To achieve this goal, the government has operated through the Command Center for Combating Illegal Fishing to address the matter in compliance with international rules.The government has also imposed a temporary ban on fishing activities in order to effectively restructure the industry to abide by international rules; it has also approved a 230-million baht fund to assist fishermen who have been affected by the recent stoppage.

As for the latest round of inspections by the European Union in October, the Prime Minister has expressed his confidence in Thailand’s readiness, thanks to coordinated efforts by all sides. He also extended his gratitude to related officials and fishermen for their cooperation in solving the country’s issues of the EU concerns.

The mind boggles.

Reason says contradictions make no sense. The heart says that good triumphs over evil. The stomach says that the Golden Rule is in effect -- he who has the gold makes the rule.

A 230-million baht fund for fishermen who decided to stop work instead of complying is a great incentive.

But it's not a solution and the gratitude is unearned. And when the fund runs out, it's likely the fishermen will simply ask for more funds - beats compliance.

The Prayut government needs to stop subsidizing farmers and fishermen. Grants, subsidies and soft loans are only short-term bandaids and do nothing for a sustaining economy. It must focus on a national economic strategy that can grow industry wealth. As it is, the government is on the path of bankrupting the nation's treasury at a time that it's falling into an economic depression.

Has anybody noticed, that when this man talks about the fishery issues, he never mentions the biggest issue, which is slavery? He always talks about tackling unlicensed boats, etc. But rarely is the issue of slavery mentioned. It is a huge issue, and one that goes to the heart of the complaints from the EU and the US. Justifiably so. But, it does not get addressed much.

It's always the same in this plaice, the sole reaction is to announce a new initiative. They can trawl for new ideas as much as they like, but no matter what they dredge up, the EU will still carp!
