Hua Hin: Oil slicks from Mae Klong and Tha Chine river estuaries continue to be swept into beaches in Ban Khao Tao in Hua Hin district and Pran Buri district of Phrachuab Khiri.

Officials of Pran Buri national park lodged a complaint with district police today (Friday) after oil slicks struck beaches in the national park extending about one kilometer long. Oil patches are also floating in the sea off the beaches.

Park chief Somsak Krithathon said that the park’s shoreline characteristic made it vulnerable to floating garbage and oil slicks being swept on shore.

Officials from the park and from Paknam Pran tambon administration organization have mobilized workers to help clean up the beaches.

Mean While, Oil slicks also found in Ban Khao Tao in Hua Hin streching about two kilometers long.

At some point other boats that are being adversely affected by this spill will realize the personal cost it is having on them and report the offender.

Meanwhile, I hope tourists with hotel bookings learn of this oil spill and have time to change their holiday plans.

Good idea, let the oil wash up on the beach, then make a complaint! It would be stupid to try and clean it up, when its still at sea.

Unfortunately the logistics are quite difficult based on just how spread out the spill is.

Plus it would require special skimming equipment (Spill Response Fleet) that I have yet to see or hear about.

However, Thailand does have manpower and shore-based equipment so that is what they are using.

Cheers

This is squid country. Has anyone heard any talk about the effects on local seafood? Any advisories in Thai media?

Yes there is a story from Thai PBS that the beaches are all clean and everything is back to normal. So don't worry.

By the way, If you are coming to the beach in Hua Hin, don't forget to bring a old pair of flip flops to wear on the sand.

If you don't, your feet will be covered in tar and it is almost impossible to remove.

Then make sure you have a plastic bag to put the flip flops in after you exit the beach, because they can't touch anything.

You will not be able to wear the flip flops anywhere else, like in your car or even on the pavement in front of your house or condo.

If you do go swimming and start to itch, this is normal for the sea water in Hua Hin.

Not sure about the squid.

quite true about the tar. some time last week went on the beach in Cha-am they had a few police officers there on the beach which I thought was pretty strange

my dog can not go in the water due to a recent surgery and I stayed about 1 minute on the beach.

came back and later saw that the bottom of my left foot was covered in that tar substance, indeed very hard to remove. took a harsh brush and dish soap to get rid of it.

I reckon it was "cleaned" the same way that they usually do on Wednesdays cleanups, which is mostly pulling some sort of home made plough behind a pickup, shuffling the sand around..

and then you end up with the tar hidden from view but you still step on it and it sticks to everything

I never saw anything out of the ordinary when I went and got tar'd both times. then I looked it up

even now if you walk around and see any plastic debris/bags or bottles around you see them covered in oil and deformed.
