CHIANG RAI, 15 November 2015 (NNT) - Security units in the Thai-Myanmar border zones in Chiang Rai have stepped up security in inspecting individuals and vehicles entering and leaving the country along the borders following attacks in Paris on 14 November 2015.

Superintendent of the Mae Sai Immigration Police Col. Sit Sirikangwankul on Sunday said border checkpoints usually had strict measures to screen individuals and prevent smuggling of all types of illegal objects. The measures were intensified after the deadly attacks in Paris in a bid to prevent groups of people from creating violent incidents in the country, especially those who were involved in international crime, said the official.

Col. Sit added that the authorities had not found suspicious groups of people, illegal objects or irregularities in the border zones. Continuous surveillance will be maintained in the areas.

Paris, IS, Syria/Iraq... Mai Sai? Someone please explain the connection...

Yes, I will step up to the plate.

Thai cops (Immigration are cops) never miss an opportunity to puff their chests out and big themselves up to the self-censoring, cowed and browbeaten media. It is easy to strut your stuff when nobody will tell you what you're doing is silly.

This is the first I've heard of ISIT (Islamic State In Thailand). The ignored child will do anything to attract someone's attention in order to make himself feel important and significant..

Ridiculous bunch, everywhere else called Muppets Show, here it's Immigration. It begs believe, even if one's already used to their permanent bs-ing.

And yes, congrats to the always excellent PR department (if there really is such a thing?), lol ...

As for ISIT, well there are three known members but considered 'no threat at all' - word is they mixed up IS with ISS and are now still waiting for safe space-passage to the califate!

OK, now terrorists know not to use the Mai Sai immigration checkpoint due to increased checks...or at least to use a better disguise upon entry...or just wait a few days until checkpoint security goes back to a normal level.

What about all the other immigration checkpoints around the Thai border?

That's a relief. I have been terrified that the perpetrators of the Paris attacks were going to cross the French border at Mae Sai.

It seems Thais do not just have a problem with English language proficiency. They could do with brushing up on their geography.
