Schools, firms may need to shut for Bike for Dad
Kornkamol Aksorndej
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The authorities are considering asking schools and firms in some parts of Bangkok to close down on December 11 to facilitate "Bike for Dad" - a big cycling event marking His Majesty the King's 88th birthday.

His Majesty actually turns 88 years old on December 5.

As the event will involve a large parade of bicycles and will affect traffic, the authorities believe some schools and firms may have to shut down.

"Some of the schools have already expressed an intention to close down that Friday," Assistant National Police Commissioner Lt-General Anan Srihiran said yesterday.

He said the authorities involved would decide whether to ask companies in certain areas to provide the same co-operation.

As many as 100,000 people have registered for the event in Bangkok. HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will lead the parade in the capital.

Bike for Dad events will be held simultaneously around the country, as well as many other countries.

Police yesterday held a meeting with various agencies to plan preparations including security details.

"We will pay special attention to the Ratchaprasong, Saladaeng, Ploenchit and Sathon intersections," Anan said, adding that technology would be used to boost safety during the event.

The Bike for Dad route in Bangkok will start and finish at the Royal Plaza.

The big rehearsal for the event will take place on November 28.
