Cover for new car on monthly payments ?

Featured Replies

New Mirage, and the "owner", (named on the policy), insists that I and anyone with a valid licence is covered to drive, and has pointed out

the relevant clause in the policy..in Thai..well this is Thailand but I cannot read it..

Can anyone please relate what they might know about this.

If it is true is the same level of cover applied to others?

Also I can see no numbers that may relate to paying a fixed amount on any claim, I would expect that an "excess"would be usual.

I have called the Insurer and visited Mitsubishi sales, but ......???

Thank You

Standard policy covers the car and all drivers, but there are covers where only named drivers are covered.

Quite often there is no excess at such, except for certain accidents, e.g. accidents without another car involved.

Anyone with a valid drivers license is also covered on a "named driver policy" but there is an excess fee for accidents where the driver is at fault and is not the named driver on the policy. The excess fee is usually 6000 baht to repair damages to own car and 2000 baht to repair the other party's car.

Not correct.

So please advise what you believe to be correct. I have had the relevant part of the policy translated, and it appears that any licensed driver can drive.

However still not clear about the excess, but think that stevenl suggestion seems reasonable.

Thank You

Automobile insurance in this country requires two types of insurance.

the first is the one that covers damage to your or another vehicle.

second is the one that covers any bodily harm.

if you have both of them I do believe anyone can use the vehicle and be covered.

Assuming you are talking about a 1st Class policy then you can have either ‘Any Driver’ or ‘Named Driver’ (max of 2). Naturally if ‘Any Driver’ then you are able to drive the vehicle.

However as you mention the car is on finance(?) then typically the finance company would have it covered under an ‘Any Driver’ policy.

Please feel free to email a copy of the policy to us - we are happy to translate and check just what your friend does have and report back.

I think stevenl might have misunderstood me.

On a regular 1st class policy yes anyone can drive and there is no excess fee at all for a different driver.

However if the policy specifies up to two "named" drivers (so you get a discount on the policy),

Then yes the excess fees I mention apply if it is a different driver than the ones specified on the policy.

So does the policy name any specific drivers? If you are not sure then I would send to AA Brokers so they can check for you.

You may have a policy where non named drivers are still covered on 1st class with an excess, but that is not the standard.
