webfact Posted November 17, 2015 Author Posted November 17, 2015 Don't forget to watch the brightest Leonid meteor showers tonightBANGKOK: -- Tonight – November 17, 2015 – and Wednesday morning before dawn, don't miss the chance to watch the 2015 Leonid meteor shower, the brightest of all meteor showers. The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) is inviting sky watchers to watch the Leonid meteor shower which will be seen between midnight tonight and dawn on Wednesday morning. The meteor shower will be the brightest and the fastest to encounter on Earth, with fragments of space dust hitting the atmosphere at an incredible 71 kilometres a second or 254,276 kilometres an hour (158,000 mph).Such the brightest and fastest speed that the meteor shower travel earned its reputation as “king of meteor showers”, said NARIT deputy director Dr Sarun Posayachinda. He said the Leo constellation will appear on the sky on the northeast at about 1.00 am on Wednesday but the best time to watch the Leonid meteor showers will be from 03.00 am until dawn. However in Thailand, it is expected to see around 10-15 meteors per hour between the said time, he said. But he said although the meteors to be seen will be few, but they will be the brightest to encounter on Earth. He said the best place to watch should be out of city and away from streetlights and the best position is to lie on the ground as the centre of meteor shower will occur right above the head and streak across the whole sky.Although the shower is technically viewable from most places in the world, the timing lines up perfectly for those in the US, who can expect to see around 15 meteors per hour between midnight and dawn on Wednesday morning. The shower occurs when Earth moves through the dust trailing behind the comet Tempel-Tuttle, and small pieces of debris – roughly around the size of a pea – burn up in the atmosphere.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/dont-forget-to-watch-the-brightest-leonid-meteor-showers-tonight -- Thai PBS 2015-11-17

easybullet3 Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 At 1am I will lie on the ground and look up. Not too sure what my small brown earthling will make of it . I'm laying down, looking up, seeing nothing. From 02:40am till now (03:20am). Full view of the sky from my roof, clear sky... Am I supposed to be looking STRAIGHT UP? I've been checking up and all directions... Nothing

I was expecting it to be at Star-Height,, but it seemed lower than airplane height! From West to East... (lasting around 3 seconds) and quite bulbus.. Like a sperm-shape head, lol
steve73 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I was up all night - very poor showing... just a couple of dim streaks... but I did get jumped on at one point, so might have missed a few...!

Lol but... can I ask: the few Streaks that you did see.. Did they seem at VERY Low Altitude ? i mentioned above (in my previous post) that I was expecting them to be at Star Height.. (or at least space height). but the illusion was that it was at Airplane height!!! what was your observation on this ?
