Diabetes Reversal

Hi all I have had type 2 diabetes for about 15 years now and subscribe to

regular update info e-mails from "Diabetic Direct"

I recently received an e-mail from someone called David Andrews who claims

through a website called " diabetesdestroyer.com " that diabetes can be

reversed and all previous sufferers from diabetes can be free of it within

a few weeks. Has anyone on this thread heard of this guy or his claims?

That website is vastly overstating what is possible. The research he is claiming to back up his assertions only included people recently diagnosed with diabetes and included a very small sample of people.

Andrews is also adding in a few pills and potions which are, without a shadow of doubt, not proven scientifically effective.

In short, he's yet another Internet snake oil salesmen peddling false hope with the sole intention of lining his own pocket.

You can read about the original research on reversing the effects of type 2 diabetes at http://www.ncl.ac.uk/magres/research/diabetes/reversal.htm

Many thanks AyG that is exactly the kind of info I was hoping my OP would generate.

Great link thanks again.

Diabetes 2 is only reversible in a couple of very well defined groups of people who probably didn't suffer true diabetes in the first place. In one instance in newly diagnosed people who have become clogged up with visceral fat, and in the other with obese people who have bariatric surgery. Even then the work is experimental.

To all intents and purposes diabetes 2 is not reversible, and not curable. However as you know it can be controlled so that the sufferer leads a completely normal long life.

Neither exercise not bariatic surgery "reverses" diabetes, there is no such thing.

Exercise, weight loss (however achieved) and proper diet will all help keep blood sugar in people with Type II diabetes, often sufficiently so that they do not need medication. However, if they stop the exercise, revert to bad diet, regain the weight they will again have abnormal glucose metabolism. The condition has not been "reversed".

Exercise has been called the silver bullet in diabetes reversal [emoji106]

You are probably correct in that statement Lumbini but unfortunately not very far down the Diabetes road

painful neuropathy greatly curbs the ability, no matter how keen, of anyone to accomplish any kind of

meaningful or effective exercise.

Sheryl I am not so sure it is possible to be so absoloute, it's new stuff, but the claim is there with proof apparently, bariatric surgery on some obese people actually reversed their diabetes, ie, the patient no longer suffers from glucose intolerance. Perhaps it hasn't been peer reviewed yet.

They no longet had elevated glucose because they lost weight. If they regained yhe weight, they would again have it. It is not a "reversal".

For some reason the internet has spread and misused this term such that people confuse control of type 2 diabetes through wt loss, diet and/or exercise with "reversal". It is not, nor is it anything new.

  • 2 weeks later...

Prof. Roy Taylor has recently published a paper on the aetiology of type 2 diabetes and how to reverse it. That's at http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/36/4/1047.full.pdf

A layperson's summary on how to cure type 2 diabetes is at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/12027265/Type-2-diabetes-can-be-cured-through-weight-loss-Newcastle-University-finds.html

The solution is simple: lose 1 g of fat. The challenge is where from.

It's a convenient and popular view for newly diagnosed people to adhere to... especially pre-diabetic people. Doctors don't help much either. They often give patients the idea that it can be reversed. I think it's a doctor's way of softening the blow.
