Villagers in Korat, Nakhon Ratchasima province, were upset Monday after a popular magical monk absconded with donation money, leaving an unfinished naga temple behind.

KORAT — When Phra Thep Srisuttho walked into Nakhon Ratchasima about six months ago he made a stir with folks as word of his special power spread. Srituttho, it was said, could communicate with the serpentine spirits known as Naga.

The villagers were happy to have him stay and pooled their money to build a worthy place of worship.

Yesterday, those who’d thrown their support behind the magic monk traveled to the Polkrung Police Station to complain he disappeared with more than 300,000 baht they donated.

I'd have known better than to donate. I was brought up Catholic, so I know how these types of charlatans operate at Sunday mass with their hands always out looking for money under false pretense.

Probably flew off in his private jet.

When will people stop being so gullable believing every thing these crooks tell them????

When the people see the heads of state sanctioning and giving to star gazers and palm readers then they too are easily doped into believing anything.Hey any body out there want to buy a moon rock that NASA lost last year?

just get a fortune teller to divine his hiding place and nab him. Be sure to wear the correct amulets, you can buy at your local temple.

abracadabra, open sesame and all that jazz

I donate money to the village temple. It is sins long established temple and the monks does not handle the money but a small "council" chosen by the villagers (today consisting of the village headman, a store owner and a retired school director) handles that. All donations and all expenses are clearly declared on board in the temple. This year they built a bell tower for about 500,000 Baht, every Baht is accounted for and the 50,000 they managed to get as kickbacks from the builder (they asked for a discount but that got just a blank NO so they asked for something under the table instead...) is already put in the account for next years project to build an ubosot.

One thing I realized soon after coming here to Thailand is that there are many people that are sincere and I could trust with my life but there are some people that would not hesitate jeopardizing their life or family trying to steal or con you out of a 100 Baht. One friend exonerated his son and kicked him out of their home after he had stolen tools worth 500 from me.

Monk's final act of magic...disappearing with the donations...has anyone checked the back-street sois of Pattaya to see if the ladies are magically relieving the monk of his stolen funds?

Perhaps, just perhaps, the term naga, just might be a way to describe some phenomena that westrners have never noticed or which doesn't exist in the western world? It doesn't have to mean literally that some water serpent talks to people or whatnot. Of course you'd rather have it that way so you could have fun ridiculing others and wouldn't have to go to the trouble to adjust how you see the world.
