Just came back from our annual Loy Krathong celebration and I am pretty much pi&& off...I thought I've seen pretty much here but today was a new low point...

We went to a temple with lake near Rawai and let our Krathong float like the most decent people around but there were two (............ ) thugs in the water who stole the coins from each Krathong...

I just hope Kharma does its job...

Yeah → saw that last year in CM...

Just put the Kratong in then flip the coin off at the same time...You've done your part and got it to the water.....

It's funny how when farang moves to Thailand he suddenly believes in this karma crap

Yes it is strange.

You don't have to come to Thailand to encounter it, and like "Appointment in Samarra" (the W Somerset Maugham retelling), leaving Thailand will not mean that you avoid it.

The 'phenomena' of little children swimming around to take the coins, is as much a tradition as the floating of the Kratongs themselves . . . . . Perhaps, if Falangs would actually "communicate" with their Thai' "better-halves", they would know this . . . . . .

You've gone faux native, mate. Check out the Thai News forum. Thais are not happy about this either. Anyway, it's an insane tradition that takes money out of circulation, so good on those guys. I'm sure they'll reinvest it in their local economy by spending it on alcohol and lottery tickets.

They are not little children. They are invariably the local louts looking for money for more lao khao!

The members "liking" your reply is a form of digital karma.

agree with you. but communicate with their Thai girlfriends? seen too many that can barely speak English. Always wondered what they talk about besides hand signals and pointing at their wallet.

I could take this one step further.

In Phitsanulok when people set their krathongs off into the river Nan, it was almost expected to see the kids swim out to mid stream and collect the one bahts and satangs from the floats. What wasn't expected was that once the krathongs were 'lightened', they would be brought to the shore, dried off, re-candled and re-sold again further down stream.

Enterprising little gits..........................wink.png

Saw this last year in CM.

If they want to swim in the dirty water of Ping go for it. If people want to be so stupid to put money in them, go for it.
I didn't put money in mine last year and I didn't go to the river madness this year either and I've never launched a lantern. I think the whole thing is silly and a giant littering on a already littered country.

I love how people pay respect to the spirits in the river / pond etc by floating kratongs made of plastic and polystyrene. Im sure the spirits are chuffed to pieces by having their home polluted.

If that doesnt invoke bad karma then nothing wil.

Up here in rural Khampaeng Phet our kratongs were made from parts of a banana tree and the only think that wasn't biodegradable was the candle.

A friend made hers from the head of a sunflower.

We floated them off down the klong and didn't see anybody else around.

Buddhism here has value but it is eroded by all the money making schemes recently built around it. As ridiculous as the Monk in hotpot or monk walking on water etc.

Last year I was near Soi 2-3-4 on Beach road and the children , I'd estimate up to 12 years old, where out in the water chest deep and took the coins after the floats got out 15 or so feet from the shore.

This year I was down near 13/3 and the guys was early 20's and couldn't wait for the floats to get 7 foot from the shore. He was a lout.

Utter nonsense anyway.

I wonder why someone has to put money in these things in the first place? And then some foreigners do it?

Yes, I remember a similar situation when my grandmother went to church and regularly put money in the collection box, and some more after confession. East is East and West is West. Same, same but different.

You must be a barrel of laughs at parties....or have you stopped going to them as well?

It is similar to New Year in Europe. There you bring in Coal, Bread and Money. Same reason with the money on a Krathong. Befor anyone says it yes I do know Loy Krathong is not the Thai New Year
