Normally, I cook and fix our own Thanksgiving dinner at home. But this year, because of the U.S. bird flu issues, the turkey supplies around BKK seem to be either not good or over priced. So that's led me to abandon plans for cooking at home this year, and instead look at going out or just skip it altogether -- something I don't think I've ever done as yet in my life.

I think I've seen info on most of the regular turkey dinner options around BKK that do Thanksgiving meals years to year. The lowest prices I've seen this year are a couple of places in the 850-900 baht range, quite a few more in the 1200-1300 baht range, and then the chain hotels at silly prices of 1800 to 2500 baht per person or more.

Since my Thai wife isn't a big turkey fan, I'm looking just for something modest I can do for myself, as opposed to shelling out 1000b x 2 for a meal that she's really not excited to eat.

Thus, any suggestions for a modestly/reasonably priced turkey dinner around BKK? There used to be some options in Patpong and Suk Soi 22/Washington Square, but of course the square has since been flattened to make way for "progress" via another new (future) mall. Yeesh....

Head to Foodland...just keep expectations low. They have for years done Thanksgiving dinner for a very low price...less than B300 all in.

Everything is there: turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, ect but the portions will insure that you won't experience the traditional overstuffed feeling....about the portion of an old fashioned "TV Dinner".

Things are usually finished by late afternoon....4pm or so.

The Foodland on Sukhumvit Soi 16 is a good choice...more spacious seating than other branches. Don't forget that Soi 16 does not go directly off Sukhumvit; you have to walk behind the Stock Exchange building on the Asok/Ratchapidesic intersection.

If that is a little to low rent, Bullys Pub between Suk-4 & Suk.-2 puts on a good spread as does Bourbon Street, on Soi Ekkamai, about 3 or 4 blocks on the left walking from Sukhumvit. Both normally less than B1000.

Thanks for that suggestion, Dave. I totally forgot about Took Lae Dee at Foodland. They certainly did turkey dinner plates last year for a very reasonable 300b or so price, so I'm assuming they'd do again this year. Nothing amazing, but certainly enough to cover the bases. And if one isn't enough, I could always order a second plate and still come out ahead.

fyi, Bourbon St this year is 1250 baht net, no reservations. So they were one of the ones in the 1200 to 1300 range I was referring to. I haven't seen Bully's pricing for this year, and they never advertise or post anything online AFAICT. But last year, their Thanksgiving buffet was getting up there in price.

At lesser ranges, the Huntsman Pub in the basement of the Landmark Hotel supposedly is doing something for about 900 baht, not sure if that's a meal or buffet. And the American Bar and Grill on Suk Soi 8 is doing a buffet for just under 900 baht, though I ate there once for a regular meal and pretty much decided never to return.

Dunno Smokie... If you look at their website, it mentions a come 4, pay 2 offer at the other venue, the Atrium Cafe, where the prices are something like 1700 for lunch and 2400 baht for dinner, both net, per person. Ouch if you're paying those rates. But not bad if you can do the 4 people pay the price of 2 offer, though certainly any alcohol beverages would be extra there.

But for the Huntsman, I believe they mention holders of their membership card being eligible for a 20% discount -- but don't mention anything about 2-4-1 or 4 pay 2 at the Huntsman.

Meanwhile, re the pricing comparison between the Huntsman and Bourbon St offers I should have made a more apples to apples comparison to be fair.

Bourbon St.'s 1250b price is net and includes a soft drink, so that's what you'll pay, period. In the case of the Huntsman, the 900++ base price becomes just above 1050 baht when you add in mandatory tax and service charge, and then if you add in some kind of beverage, even just a soft drink, it's going to push the total into the 1100 to 1200 baht range, depending on your choice of drink (or even more if it's Smokie and it's multiple drinks tongue.png ). So, overall, despite the surface difference in price, probably pretty comparable when all is said and done.

I'm glad I don't celebrate Thanksgiving....I'll wait for the Xmas thread before getting too involved!

Just noticed, Sunrise Tacos at their Silom Soi 4 location only are doing a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, not buffet, for 650++ (so about 760b total) today from 2 until 11 p.m. That includes dessert, but not drinks.

http://www.sunrisetacos.com/thanksgiving.php

They used to do that at their Suk Soi 10 main location, but that closed during this past year.

I hope the food is of a higher standard than their tacos!

That wasn't a recommendation... Just an advisory, same with everything else above.

I recall quite mixed reviews of Sunrise's past Thanksgiving offerings at Soi 10. But since I've never had their Thanksgiving meal myself, can't speak to it from personal experience.

Overall, though, I've had both quite good and quite not good meals at Sunrise over the years, depending on the location and item. ordered.

As I am sure you've gathered...I am watching this thread with an eye to Christmas.....as similar menus will be on in most places.

Bourbon St sounds interesting....but I suspect timing is everything with these buffet meals and I am not good at queueing!

Re Foodland above: nothing fancy. Cash only, no bank cards. Oddly, no gravy at all.

But, for a modest price, it covered my turkey cravings for the day, and here's hoping for a better turkey season next year.

BTW, note, Foodland is planning to offer their turkey dinners today through Monday the 30th. So there's time to stop by.

I tried to add a comment, but for some reason it would not "take". Even now, I can only post in the box being quoted and not in the new post area. In any event, the effort to inform is appreciated, but I can't take what is offered by Foodland as a reasonable facsimile for what is/should be "Thanksgiving Dinner", at least from my memory. But if it satisfied your craving for turkey, well done. I am having a "mega" (1.6kg) chicken with oyster sausage stuffing, pumpkin with butter and nutmeg/cinnamon. broccoli with shitake mushrooms drizzled with olive oil and rice with pumpkin seeds as my substitute for Thanksgiving Dinner. I'd post pictures, but you'd cry. wai2.gif

No roast spuds?

That's criminal Thailaw!

Unfortunately, no one in my house eats potatoes, unless they are mashed, except me. And I was just too tired to go through the exercise of mashing potatoes, so I had a double (triple) helping of oyster and sausage stuffing, which was much better than potatoes in any event -- guilty as charged!

I just finished cleaning the kitchen (what a mess!), and I think I understand better now why TGJB opted for Foodland -- no where near as good, but when you're finished with the meal you just push back from the table and waddle home, and leave the clean-up to them.

The Foodland Thanksgiving meal really could use some gravy.. Can't understand why they're serving a little cup of cranberry sauce, but absolutely no gravy. The sliced turkey was a bit dry, as was the meatloaf-like slice of some kind of dressing/stuffing. Both would have benefited some from the addition of gravy.

But, for 295b net, no ++ at Took Lae Dee, I'm certainly not complaining. I ate their turkey dinner and was fine with it as kind of like a low-brow coffee shop meal (which is in fact what TLD is, so no surprise there.) I considered the idea of ordering a second plate, but in the end, didn't feel like I needed it.

Their meal includes a decent sized bowl of red clam chowder and finishes with a small slice of their own bakery produced berry pie. All in all, one helping was enough to leave me feeling satisfied. And no dishes or pots and pans to wash afterward.

PS - But, for Christmas upcoming, I might want to do a LITTLE bit better. smile.png
