Blessing ceremony held for ancient chariots to be used in royal sponsored supreme patriarch's funeral procession

26-11-2558-35-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- A "Buang Sruang" or blessing ceremony was yesterday performed on the two royal chariots which will be used to carry the coffin containing the body of the late Supreme Patriarch for royal-sponsored funeral cremation.

Rehearsal for the funeral procession is scheduled on November 28, and December 7 and 10.

The actual day of the funeral procession is on December 16.

The blessing ceremony was performed after renovation of the two chariots has been completed after almost two years of work.

The Fine Arts Department was host to hold the ‘Buang Sruang’ ceremony to bless the royal chariots carrying the body of the late Supreme Patriarch Somdet Phra Nyanawamvara, the kingdom’s 19th Supreme Patriarch since King Rama I.

The ceremony was performed at the Sib Moo traditional craftsmen office of the Fine Arts Department in Nakhon Pathom province.

Renovation of the chariots employed skilled craftsman of the Sib Moo Office of Traditional Arts. Others are personnel from the Royal Thai Navy Dockyards who were responsible for the fine ropes that will be used to bear the vehicles and the Post Engineer Department of the Royal Thai Army which worked on structural parts including chassis, wheels suspension and other vital parts.

Culture Minister Wira Rojpoj-narat said the ceremony was performed to bless the vehicles as well as the people who have been crucial in carrying out the repairs.

The chariots were constructed during the reign of King Rama VI and in the past have borne eight Supreme Patriarchs. They were most recently used to bear the body of the 18th Supreme Patriarch in 1989.

After yesterday’s blessing ceremony, the chariots would be transported to Wat Boworn Nivet temple, getting ready for rehearsal this Saturday, and again on December 7 and 10.
