VIDEO : Pheu Thai calls Gen Udomdej to quit

BANGKOK: -- The Pheu Thai Party today issued a statement calling on the deputy defence minister Gen Udomdej Sitabutr to step down to show his responsibility after two of his aides were alleged to have involvement in the Rajabhakti museum park scandal and also become lese majeste charge suspects.

In the statement, the party cited three reasons that surfaced and which strongly contradicted earlier claim by the military.

It said the military earlier insisted that fund used for the museum park construction was derived only from public donations, and the construction was transparent.

But Pheu Thai said the new evidence revealed by the chairman of the State Audit Commission Chaisit Trachutham showed that part of the construction amounted to 63.57 million baht was drawn from the Central Fund which is government budget.

It also claimed construction costs of several buildings, fence walls and traffic signboards were unusually high.

Thirdly, the party said warrants issued by the Martial Court ordering the arrest of two army officers for lese majeste charge were weighted for its call for Gen Udomdej to resign as deputy defence minister.

The two army officers were Maj Gen Suchart Prommai, and Col Kachachat Boondee.

Maj Gen Suchart, who served as a senior adviser to the Royal Thai Army and personal aide to the former Army chief Gen Udomdej, is director and secretary of the Rajabhakti Foundation, while Col Kachachart was also a former close aide.

Col Kachachat had fled the country before he could be formally charged with lese majeste.

The party also called on the prime minister to make a decision to preserve the dignity of the Army and retain its loyalty to the highest institution.

According to Khaosod, The martial court has issued arrest warrants for two senior CSD police officers and Maj Gen Suchart, charging them for insulting the monarchy.

The warrants were the latest development in an ongoing purge of high ranking officials under the accusation they sought monetary gain by falsely claiming or abusing ties to the Royal Family.

The two CSD officers are Pol Col Pairoj Rojanakachorn and Pol Lt Col Thammawat Hiranyalekha.

All three were charged with violating Section 112 of the Penal Code, which forbids any remark or action that defames the Royal Family. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in jail per offence.

The three warrants came from several weeks of investigation into what police described as a group of individuals capitalising on their ties to the monarchy, according to Royal Thai Police deputy commissioner Pol Gen Sriwarah Rangsipramnakul.

The crackdown was made public October 18, and four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged “royal impostors” clique involving palace aide and famous astrologer Suriyan Sujaritpalawong, or known as “Mor Yong,” his secretary Jirawong Watanathewasilp, policeman Pol Maj Prakrom Warunprapha and his partner Sukkho Tamseri.

Suriyan, Jirawong and Prakrom were charged with lese majeste, while Sukkho faces firearms-related charges.

Of the three accused of lese majeste, only Jirawong remains alive.

Pol Maj Prakrom and Mor Yong died in custody at a military prison on October 24 and November 7, respectively.
