Whats with the bar huggers commenting on Phuket town being a resort town?

There's barely any hotels in Phuket town, its a CITY FOR THAIS. The only tourist we get there are backpackers looking 5mins at some old shophouses.

Saphan Hin is a city park with sport facilities.

Sadly the majority of foreigners in Thailand don,t seem to get that. It's the i,ll do as i damn please attitudes of the foreigners that piss off the Thais. Seen far too many half naked foreign women walking down main street and into shops. I wonder why the Thais do not respect us. Get a grip this is Southeast Asia not Brazil !

It doesn't take long to understand why Thai girls wear jeans and t-shirts while swimming in the sea...

It's called decency and sun protection. As a society we decided long ago to cover our body and move on from sex, hunt, gather to better things

Walking around naked is not what society is about(especially in Thailand). Might be enjoyable for some when the woman is hot but most of the time its downright upsetting because its the ugliest whales that cover the least.

The police are not using the word decency because the western civilization that mostly visits thailand have never heard of that word. Safety makes it easier for them to understand why they cant walk around naked and makes them a bit more scared to act out for attention by being naked in public.

What rubbish.

The Thai's that you suggest are offended, have no problem with the other Thai's dancing on poles, wearing very little, or nothing at all.

How many "half naked" Thai's have you seen walk down the street with a foreigner, on the way to his hotel room?

The reason Thai's have no respect for foreigners is because we are seen by them as foolish with our money, not because of a lack of respect for Thai culture.

"Get a grip" - this is Thailand.

We all know you've never left your west coast if you had you would know that on the east coast Sapan Hin is not a place with poles or half naked thai girls. The reason Phuket town is so expensive is because normal thais want nothing to do with the kind of western or thai people that live on the west coast.

You mean like this Saphan Hin?

@ bearpolar

So, there are "normal Thai's" and "abnormal Thai's." Really? I thought they were ALL Thai. cheesy.gif

I'm sure those "normal Thai's" are happy to make all the money that the "abnormal Thai's" bring to Phuket. cheesy.gif

"Whats with the bar huggers commenting on Phuket town being a resort town?" - probably because Phuket Town is on the tropical island of Phuket, which attracts millions of tourists a year, from all around the world.

Maybe some "backpackers" wanted to relax in the park, and get a tan.

Yes, I know, a hard concept to understand. biggrin.png

It is their country. If they feel it is not good to wear like this in the park just respect it. In many countries it is allowed by law or by their culture to wear bikinis in parks. people just not do it. is some countries it is common just respect the local culture and customs.

I'll ask again, "Has any Thai law actually been broken?"

If not, it appears the Police Officer has taken the law into his own hands, and had no right to ask them to leave.

Barely any hotels in Phuket town, PM me and I will take you out and show you at least 50.

Well done police, we do not need almost nude white people in this country, They need to behave or return home, it should be a warning sign put up at the airport . That would increase tourism by 25% according to TAT.

A guesthouse isnt a hotel

A cheap spring mattress bed in a room is not a hotel

a Hostel is not a hotel

Phuket City Police forced three bikini-clad sunbathers soaking up the sun at Saphin Hin to re-dress themselves yesterday afternoon.

Sounds like the reporter is also from the west coast and unaware of anything Thai

How do you get from that to safin hin

By the way, its not a city, its a tourist resort island. I suggest you move to Utah.

Have you ever been to the park in question (Saphan Hin), Muang Phuket, or even Phuket?

Saphan Hin is near the southern end of Phuket Town (Yes - the City, not the Island). This is definitely a "locals park", and there are no tourist attractions or hotels anywhere nearby (unless you consider the Immigration and DLT offices to be tourist attractions). Take a look at the picture that was posted previously; this is how Thais enjoy their local parks.

Additionally, Saphan Hin is well known as a location where a number of gangs hang out, with several gang-related murders occurring there over the past months. It's also a popular location for drug deals. The criminal element there is what has recently forced the local government to close the park at night.

"This is definitely a "locals park" - says who? It's open to the public, is it not?

"there are no tourist attractions or hotels anywhere nearby" - have you considered "the sun" is one of Phuket's biggest tourist attractions?

I think everyone needs to tone down the rhetoric and just come to some simple understandings.

Thai families enjoying a day in the park don't want to see scantily clad farangs. Fair enough, leave it at that. Heck, I hate it when people walk into a restaurant without a shirt on, it's just impolite, I see the Thai side of this issue.

I don't have an issue with the police here either. Either put proper clothing on as we have women and children here or leave, said-done-finished, your choice.

As a westerner, not really anything to get wound up about here. Cheers, GOM

Bikini clad does not mean naked!!! And FYI it's now 2015

This IS Thailand, a modest dressed Buddhist country, NOT a bikini dressed Christian country. You're not often right but your....

Wrong again farang....because,

FYI it's now 2558.

A country that have to warn their tourist not to sun bathe in a bikini in tourists spots just so the will not ne sexually harassed, has a lot to be answered for and can not

be called a tourists destination... wouldn't be much more prudent to be on a lookout for predators rather

than shoo tourist away and thus giving Thailand a bad name?

Hey, if you want to walk around naked in Euro land, Pattaya or where ever go for it, just don't flaunt it here in family areas

Are you suggesting Thai families and their children rape foreigners in bikinis?

@ spidermike007

"it is natural that some tourists are going to wear bathing suits in town. Yes, Thais may be more comfortable covering up." - your comment reminded me that a tan is considered attractive in western countries, where a dark skinned Thai is considered to come from a lower class of society in Thailand.

The Thai's may be covering up in the park, but in all probability, it's not due to being modest, and is probably due to not wanting to darken their skin. This is ceratinly true of Thai women.

You can't invite millions of tourists to come to Thailand to enjoy the warm tropical climate, and then expect them to cover up whilst they are outside enjoying the very climate Thailand promotes to tourists.

This was in a park, not in a 5 star restaurant.

You got it totally wrong, probably due to not understanding Thai society and (if you actually live in Thailand) being completely disconnected from the people and culture.

Thai people do not sun bathe, and usually wear jeans and t-shirt on the beach as wearing a bikini is like being naked for them. Only place the'd wear a swimming suit (and usually a very modest one) is in a swimming pool where it is not allowed to go in the water fully dressed, but most will put on a gown as soon as they get out of the water. You might view it as ridiculous and old fashion, but this is Thailand, the land of the Thais and if you come here you have to respect it.

Being a tourist destination Thais are willing to accept that sort of dress code on the beach, but not in a park where you are supposed to be dressed up.

As for the police explanation - again, you have to understand the Thai way in order to understand why it was explained the way that it was.

Who was naked?

Beaches are also family areas and public areas, so no bikinis their either eh.

Then the police should be arresting those people. Doesnt sound like the nice family park some on here are portraying it to be. Leave the gangs and drug dealers alone and tell the tourists to move on. Lol

Where they sunbathing at night?

The message here is a simple one

Thai Authorities are saying that they cannot keep tourists safe when they visit here on holiday, something we all knew already.

How about making the effort to make it safe, scams - jetski - bag snatches - robberies - assaults - rapes - - muggings - murders all happening in tourist areas throughout the country - not off beaten track or places were tourists shouldn't be, and lets not get into transportation and the horrific safety track record there, bus crashes - boating accidents - drunk drivers

Maybe if they had been using some of the massive tourist income they have been earing the last 30 years to improve infrastructure and safety instead of stuffing it in their greedy pockets Thailand might actually have developed properly over the years and made an effort to provide a safe environment.

Yes - blame the tourist, the usual head in the sand denial

@ the poster with the long winded morality rant about how we've moved on from better things than "sex, hunt, gather" erm, no.

The Internet is about little else than sex, hunt, gather.

As for clothing when surfing, you need nothing but the power on.

And by the way, the pinnacle of human development suggests concepts like self actualization (including nudity) fine art (containing nudity) and a lack of shame surrounding sexuality (necessitating nudity).

These themes recur as civilisations peak, and are recurrently suppressed, as they decline, which is interesting in itself.

Good points. They were reacting to what they perceived as indecent dress, and rather than own up to that, they made a long winded, and patently false claim, that is had something to do with public safety. The entire world is aware of the fact that the RTP does NOT CARE about public safety. They never have. If they did, the roads of Koh Samui and Phuket would not claim nearly as many lives as they do. If they cared about public safety they would engage in massive traffic safety campaigns, and spend some of those billions earned from tourism. If they cared, they would arrest careless drivers, arrest drunken drivers, arrest people who cause death on the roads, and make sure they are prosecuted and spend time in prison. If they cared, which they don't.

As usual the obvious idiots are either not living in Phuket(ie: linky living repressed in malaysia) or aussie tourists waiting for their 1 week a year vacation with their beer bar honeys hoping that thailand turns as depraved as they are.

I can't believe some of these low lives think you can walk around Saudi Arabia,Turkey or other muslims countries that have tourism in mini skirts. It might be legal in some but not only is it highly disrespectful, you might also face repercussion from locals & police.

Again Sapan Hin is not a tourist destination nor a beach.
