An IDP on it's own is not valid it needs to accompany the original licence.

Even if you have all that, they may ask to see if you have a copy of your green book. One guy I was talking to got a fine for not having that and he had a Thai licence.

I got that too! No room to put my helmet under my seat!

I truly believe that it has become a game of cat and mouse. They trot out their current list of things to check or perhaps their theme of the day, if you are deficient, you will get fined. The good news behind all this is that you do have to be guilty of some infringement to be topping up their coffers! I believe the days of the random fine for nothing or invented infringement are scarce. (I recall being fined for 'speeding' and I asked how he measured my speed and he pointed at the bikes spokes...... ). It has been a while since I handed cash over, last time I got fed up of waiting at a red light when there was no traffic and turned left!
