Car bookings on December 5 increase 30 percent to over 4,000 units

BANGKOK: -- Over 4,000 cars were booked on Father’s Day on December 5 at the 32nd Motor Expo held at the Impact Arena.

Mr Kwanchai Prapaspong, the organizer of the motor show, said Monday that a total of 4,137 cars of different brands were booked on December, representing an increase of 30 percent compared to the same day last year.

For the first five days of the motor show from December 1-5, a total of 9,146 cars were booked with Isuzu taking the lead with 1,342 cars booked followed by Toyota’s 1,256 units, Mazda’s 1,144 units, Honda’s 1,129 units and Nissan’s 828 units. The number of big bikes booked for the first five days was registered at 1,438 units.

Mr Kwanchai attributed the increased car bookings to buyers’ concern of the new car tax which is due to come into force next year. The new excise car tax computes the tax calculation on the amount of carbon dioxide emissions instead of engine capacity which will raise the price of car by between 9,000-200,000 baht per unit.

He expected the number of car bookings for this year’s motor show to total 50,000 units while bookings for big bikes to total 3,000 units. Visitors to the show are estimated to be around 1.5 million.

Mr Tee Permpongpan, marketing director of Mazda Thailand, said the new excise tax has psychological effect on many potential car buyers, forcing them to make quick decisions.

"Bookings"? what does that mean?

in order to buy a new car you must "reserve" book one, the thai's do not build a great number of new cars, that is why it takes a couple of months to receive the new car you bought. sometimes it takes three or four months, no such thing as in the civilized world where you can walk in, look around buy a car and drive out with it!

I "book" a taxi and if I want to buy a car, "order" one.

Thailand has the 12th biggest motor industry in the world about the same size as the UK and French industries. About half of that is for the home market.

your premises are completely incorrect

And Thai people plunge themselves further into debt. The economy is going down the shitter but we still need new cars right!

Thailand is now like any western country. Borrow, borrow, borrow!

And 3,000 of them will be snatched back later when the 'Face' merchants fail to meet the payments !

..and you are basing those figures on what source? I suspect none - DELETED any idea of the figures for payment defaults expected in the coming year.

I assume that "booking" means to place an order for a vehicle and pay the dealer some sum of money (i.e. 10% of purchase cost). Correct?

If so, then by "booking" a vehicle this month (December 2105) for a 2016 model year vehicle to be delivered sometime in 2016 and the dealer paid the remaining difference in 2016, this avoids the tax increases said to start in 2016?

The booking fee is normally only about 10k baht for normal cars. Higher for premium cars yes but not for the average Toyota or Honda.

I guess it's a rush to buy before the tax deadline. Not much of a rush tho.. The market will be dead next year unless dealers slash their prices.
