BANGKOK: -- The superintendent of Prawet police station and four of his men were abruptly moved to the operations centre of Metropolitan Police Bureau for gross negligence of duty after a raid of an illegal casino by army troops in which 31 gamblers were rounded up.

On Monday night, about 20 troops led by Col Noppasit Sitthipongsophon raided a three-storey shophouse in Soi Chalermprakiat 9 in Prawet district which was reportedly turned into an illegal gambling den. 31 gamblers, including 17 women and 14 men, were arrested and 260,000 baht in cash were seized.

On Tuesday, Pol Maj-Gen Nanthachart Supamongkol, commander of the 4th division of Metropolitan Police Bureau, ordered the immediate transfer of Pol Col Metha Jiemkraisri, the superintendent of Prawet police; Pol Lt-Col Siri Rathraksa, the deputy superintendent; Pol Lt-Col Pakorn Thongchuang, the investigative inspector; and Pol Cpt Thongchai Kaewtha, the investigative inspector; and Pol Lt-Col Sayomphu Pakdeeputtarak, the inspector.

The five police officers are to work at the operations centre for 30 days pending an internal investigation.

When I see 'axed', I think, 'off with their heads'. Too my chagrin...that won't be a reality here. Here, they put them in a group with all of the other criminal police officers where they can talk shop, plan, scheme and make connections. Kinda like prison.

The operations centre must be the most overstaffed unit in the BIB.

My thought exactly when I read it.

The 30 day thing is new - never seen that before. I suppose it is new in order to deal with the overstaffing problem.

30 days is ample for this to blow over and these 5 can return to their posts. Even more, the gambling den will probably be open again before 30 days.

I'd think that to the majority of us the word ' axed ' has a different meaning to that of a transfer to an inactive post.

I wonder if their inactive duty time is occupied by playing cards?

The gross negligence was the fact that these 5 had not trained their counterparts in other divisions how to run a successful gambling den.

Moving them to the operations centre will allow them to provide this important service, thus solving the problem.

The infractions they commit aren't considered nearly as bad as making one lose face. Therefore, the government can't commit an act (causing one to lose face) considered more heinous than that of the criminals.

If you fully understand this logic, congratulations, you're thinking like a Thai.

Durn, that is tough, tough disciplinary action...that is, moved from one police job to another police job..."operations centre" no less.

What next? Maybe a couple hours investigation into the gross negligence before these police are allowed to assume another position in the police department.

What's considered really bad is they got caught.

Where are all the criticisms of Prayut, the army and the current government? So many people are vocal when the current govt and army makes a mistake or mismanaged something. But when they do something right and trying do things well, no criticisms or praises for the army.

Current government and army are not perfect and sure there is likely to be corruption in their ranks, but at they are doing things other governments never even bothered with. And they remove incompetent police officers! Surely some people have to acknowledge the good job out of this!!!

To be honest the army doesn't even have to bother with gambling dens. They could have shut down the den and turn a blind eye to the commanding police officers. Doing something like creates more work and enemies for the army. Yet people here still criticize the whatever the govt and army does, and they are not even citizens of this country...

In Thailand, if a cop isn't cheating, he isn't trying.

If he gets caught cheating, then he isn't trying hard enough.

The reason the BIB wont fire or file criminal charges is because in in the future when they get caught is they want the same treatment. It is the same when there is a coup.Even thogh the new head of government claimed that the reason the deed was done the replaced government was corrupt you let him/her escape with a bit of dignity and the money stolen so far. When its your turn you want the same treatment.
