A largely low-income, uneducated populace with:

The smallest penises in the World.

In a society built on face, status and power, where one can never progress.

Where anger and frustration are to be bottled up no matter what.

Where there is no rule of law, never mind enforcement of such.

All bundled up in a stinking hot, humid, feted shiphole.

Hardly surprising, is it.

What is surprising is that you are still here, if you think so little of it.facepalm.gif

One can cherry-pick statistics to support any argument.

The principal difference seems to be the access to semi-automatic and automatic weapons in the US. These weapons have only one purpose - killing people. To pretend they are hunting weapons is ridiculous. A good roo shooter in Australia will account for 50 roos in a night's hunting, armed only with a bolt-action rifle. I've been hunting with a rabbit shooter using a single shot 0.22 who head-shot 150 rabbits in one night. He would have regarded any automatics as butchery.

I haven't heard of mass shootings in Thailand. I assume that's because semi and full automatics are restricted to the military.

After the Port Arthur massacre in 1992, the ownership of semi-automatic and automatic was severely restricted. Australia hasn't had a mass shooting since.

Switzerland is frequently cited as an example of high gun ownership without gun crime. What the users of this datum neglect to mention is gun owners in Switzerland have to renew their permits once/month.

The Sandy Hook mass shooting proved to me American gun supporters are insane. The response to the shooting of 20 children was an upsurge in gun sales. If anything was going to bring about a rethink of the Second Amendment, that event was it.

Winston Churchill once said Americans usually get to the right solution, after they have tried all other options. Sadly, in the case of American gun ideology, so far he's wrong.

Another one.......

What is the link between the Port Arthur massacre and the semi-automatic buyback? Nil. No semi-automatic was even used at Port Arthur. Can you not see these events are mutually exclusive?

Ok. I will explain by example.

Victorian Government builds Wonthaggi De-sal Plant.......

Water restrictions end in Melbourne.........

The raw facts seem to indicate the knee jerk Government action solved the problem except that not 1 liter of the plant's water has ever been introduced into Melbourne's supply.

Another example of facts that are mutually exclusive except to the ignorant.

That drought as was that massacre were both aberrations. In both cases the Government responses altered nothing.

What a nonsense, and everybody believes this.

Wishful thinking and more Thailand bashing.

Most of the posters on Thaivisa spend their time criticising and patronising Thailand, why do they stay here?

Adventure sports.

Why are is there never any hysteria over these weapons that kill people all the time?

Line 'em up portray them as the Evil Killing Machines that they are.

I guess guns go "BANG" though, which makes them more scary.

I believe that some kind of restriction on the hunting knives. Age of buyer etc. You can find them for sale all over Pattaya, particularly on beach road around soi 13/1-2, and in every shopping mall across the country. I was looking at similar hunting knives for sale in booth in Big C in Klong Toey only the other day. These are the weapons of the cowardly thugs you see across the country. I would like to see some kind of control on their sale. But what ? Bloody hell shops are not supposed to be selling them anyhow. The cops walk right past.

The machetes I am not so sure. Do you have to prove that your a farmer before being allowed to buy one ? I have one, exactly the same as the third from the right on the top row. I use it to clear scrub. You don't use a throwing knife to clear scrub.

just so i can keep on living, i always assume any Thai I interact with has a gun.

it is a good habit i picked up living in parts of the US where citizens can legally carry concealed guns to defend themselves.

i am thinking you would see way more fights and assaults between Thais if it was not for the fear of getting your head blown off.

and in a country where there are no police you can rely on the help you it is almost a necessity.

I assume that every Thai male I meet carries a knife. That is more practical, because of the ease of access to a knife (particularly one that looks nasty enough to give a thug Dutch-courage to pull it), and a knife's concealability.

Are you going to make a habit of publishing absolute rubbish on TV? Martin Bryant used a Colt AR15 semi-automatic rifle to kill 35 people. Google "Martin Bryant". Or are you one of the conspiracy head cases?bah.gif

Putting up an irrelevant example is what's called the straw man argument.

Fact is Australia has not had a mass shooting since the ban on semi-automatic weapons. It's called cause and effect.

I can explain it to you. I can't understand it for you.

Quick Poll : how many of the pro guns guys here have a gun in thailand for your own safety and travel with it at all time, because they are scared to death of the bad guys with guns?

I had a carry permit in Florida mainly because of carrying cash home from my business at night but I can't legally own a gun in Thailand and even if I could if you had to shoot a Thai good chance you would be blamed no matter what the real situation was. So I settle for a dog and a machete at home. Just use your head and remain situationally aware.

If a falang kills a Thai they most probably will not get back to their home country alive, ever. The cost of wacking a person in Thailand is peanuts. They will get you in the end, even in jail. Revenge is alive and well in this country.

Surprised, Not

Immaturity with guns, vehicles alcohol, electricity, you name it. How do you think their work[lace death rates would match up against pretty near any country in Asia? Stupid beliefs in magic to protect them. Fragile egos and obsession with size or loss of "face." All good stuff for road rage or being offended by someone and shooting them..

All those gun control laws and....... This.

California has some pretty strict gun laws too.

It ain't the gun that does the killing! No more than it was the knife that did the killing of that guy on Pahonyothin a few weeks ago over the Ipad, or that guy machete that killed that family recently, or the hoe that did the killing on Koh Tao, or the psycho that slit his girlfrinds throat on walking street, or the baseball bat that beat that biker to death recently in Pattaya, or........

Not quite. Guns are fetishistic. Guns have persona. Guns have charisma. They are like a living thing in the pocket whispering "fire me". And Thais are animist.

Guns gives sense of power to any kind of people.... even to shy ones..... and pacific people. It is better to not have a gun, but guns have to be guarded inside a box with 10 locks...The time people will spend opening the locks may be enough for cool down and think about...but..when it is inside a drawer, inside a car, or inside a pocket...anything can happens. That... plus Thai people impulsiveness...Bad combination.

Or ban food in case it's used to force-feed people to death. Oh wait, that's what Maccas does.

There's enough red herrings on this thread to feed the starving in Africa.

Congratulations on the dumbest question so far. When was the last time you read about someone killing 16 people in a crowd with a machete?

Well, yours may be the dumbest response so far. Aside from the Mau Mau and Huk uprisings, several recent African rebellions, the ever-present jihadist lopping-off of heads, there are many others.

As mentioned already, the violence in the south will be a big part of this statistic. If you compare numbers from a year where the southern insurgency has not been as violent as it is today, the numbers will come out differently:

In 1993, the US had 15.2 deaths per 100,000 people. Thailand only 4.2.

Posted

Its not those dodgy Nationmaster stats that crop up every year or so again is it?

The article states the stats are from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

Furthermore, these stats are gun killings per 100k population by country and Nationmaster's are simple numbers of gun killings per country.

You need a gun law that forbids the guns for the bad guys. Current laws forbid the guns for the law abiding good guys.

The gun equalize the power between the 40 kg girl and the 80 kg rapist, or between the 20 year old narcotic user and the 75 year old grandpa......

Obviously confrontational avoidance is the best option, but when that fails, never let them get to their gun. Take it away or get the hell out of dodge. Hanging around is never an option...
When that fails, reach for the silent equalizer.

Question, would a psycho be more dangerous with or without a gun?

Of course, a psycho (who wants to kill, I guess) with a gun can inflict much more damage in a short time period than without. What's your point?

I assume you see a connection between "gun free zone" and "psycho without gun".

Did you know that France is a gun free zone? Did it save any unarmed civilian in Paris from the psychos with their AK-47s? Or did the state with its strict gun laws save anybody?

The psychos had a lot of time and were safe to execute so many innocent, defenceless people, thanks to these laws. Interestingly (no, not really), none of the lame stream media questions these laws, even after a such horrific incident.

I think if there had been some law abiding citicens being allowed to bear their guns, it would have been a huge game changer.

Btw., Venezuela is also a gun free zone.

Let's not forget that knives have multiple every day uses. Guns are fun but designed for one thing. To kill. At least with the knife it is harder to kill multiple victims before being stopped.

The big question has to be why do so many Thais get to the stage where they kill each other? They don't seem to have the mass shooting problem that the US has but they do have a very big problem.

Posted

Strange that the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation's website has nothing in their news and events page on gun deaths and searches on 'gun deaths', 'firearms death', 'firearm' or 'mass shooting' turn up nothing.

It's a gun discussion!

I think there is widespread recognition that there are too many gun deaths in Thailand, even allowing for the death toll due to unrest in the South.

But do not despair. The National Rifle Association has researched this issue in the US, and they have a solution. If there are too many gun deaths, then more law abiding people need to get guns. And if not many people are carrying their guns around, more people need to do so. In fact, the optimum solution is for every law abiding person to be carrying a gun all the time. This will greatly increase your personal safety. Trust me. Because you never know when you may be involved in a firefight with a few bad guys and 150 law abiding citizens.

There is the issue of how to distinguish the bad guys and the good guys from among the 153 people firing guns all at the same time. This is easily resolved through a simple visual check. All the good guys wear white hats and are clean shaven.
